APEDA Boosts Millet Exports with Trade Fairs, Exhibitions & Global Promotions

The Indian government is ramping up efforts to enhance agricultural exports, focusing on millets and natural farming practices. As part of the International Year of Millets 2023, the Department of Commerce, through the Agricultural & Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), has organized various trade fairs and exhibitions to promote millet usage and exports. Additionally, the newly launched National Mission on Natural Farming aims to provide safe and nutritious food while tapping into the growing global demand for chemical-free produce.
Promoting Millets Through Global Engagement
In alignment with the International Year of Millets 2023, APEDA has spearheaded numerous initiatives to raise awareness and promote the export of millets. These activities include participation in international trade fairs, sampling events, and buyer-seller meets, all designed to showcase the versatility and nutritional benefits of millets. The government is collaborating closely with Indian embassies and various government departments to ensure a robust presence in global markets. This concerted effort not only aims to enhance the branding of Indian millets but also positions them as a key focus area in both domestic and international fairs. By leveraging these platforms, India seeks to establish itself as a leading exporter of millet products, tapping into the increasing global interest in healthy and sustainable food options.
National Mission on Natural Farming Launched
The Government of India has introduced the National Mission on Natural Farming (NMNF) as a standalone Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmersโ Welfare. This initiative aims to promote natural farming practices across the country, ensuring the availability of safe and nutritious food for all. With a growing global trend favoring chemical-free produce, the NMNF is well-positioned to capitalize on the increasing demand for certified natural products. The mission emphasizes the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, which not only benefit consumers but also enhance the livelihoods of farmers engaged in natural farming.
Strategic Initiatives to Enhance Agricultural Exports
To bolster India’s agricultural exports, the government has outlined several strategic initiatives. These include broadening the agricultural export basket by introducing new products, penetrating new markets, and exporting from emerging producing regions. Enhanced branding and promotion of Indian agricultural produce are also key components of this strategy. The government aims to increase export realization through value-added agricultural exports and expand the market for organic products. Furthermore, training and capacity building for producers and stakeholders are essential to ensure quality produce that meets international phytosanitary standards. The development of sea protocols for perishable horticultural exports and linking Farmers Producers Organizations (FPOs) and Self Help Groups (SHGs) to the export value chain are additional measures being implemented.
Addressing Trade Barriers and Enhancing Market Access
To protect exporters from protectionist trade policies, the Indian government is actively engaging in bilateral discussions with importing countries to secure market access and address trade barriers. Ongoing Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations aim to facilitate duty-free or concessional access to various markets. In cases where strict Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures or Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) pose challenges, the government is committed to resolving these issues through direct dialogue with trading partners. If necessary, specific trade concerns will be raised at the World Trade Organization (WTO) to ensure fair trade practices. These comprehensive efforts reflect India’s commitment to becoming a key player in the global agricultural export market.
