Anticipation Builds for RBI’s December Policy Meeting: Will a Repo Rate Cut Be Announced?
As the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) prepares to announce its monetary policy decision this week, economists and industry experts are divided on whether the central bank will opt for a rate cut or maintain its current stance. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, set to begin on Wednesday, has sparked significant interest regarding the potential implications for the economy. Key factors influencing this decision include India’s robust GDP growth and a notable decline in inflation rates.
Economic Growth and Inflation Dynamics
India’s GDP growth surged to an impressive 8.2% in the second quarter of FY26, leading some analysts to speculate that the RBI may choose to pause any changes to its monetary policy. This growth momentum is expected to continue into the third quarter, driven by strong rural demand and improved urban consumption patterns. Concurrently, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation has dropped to a record low of 0.25% in October, primarily due to falling food prices. This trend is anticipated to persist, potentially falling below the RBI’s own inflation forecasts.
Mehul Pandya, Managing Director and Group CEO of CareEdge Ratings, highlighted the conflicting forces at play in this scenario. He noted that while strong GDP growth typically discourages central banks from cutting interest rates, low inflation can prompt such action. Pandya emphasized that India’s economic growth is bolstered by ongoing fiscal and structural reforms. However, he also cautioned that global uncertainties and challenging trade conditions could impact the overall economic outlook. He concluded that while the environment appears conducive for a rate cut, expectations for further reductions in 2026 should be tempered.
Support for a Rate Cut
Some experts advocate for a rate cut, citing the favorable economic conditions. Mayur Modi, Co-founder and Co-CEO of Moneyboxx Finance Limited, expressed optimism about the RBI’s potential to reduce rates, given the record GDP growth and easing inflation. He argued that the current low inflation levels provide the RBI with the flexibility to prioritize growth without jeopardizing macroeconomic stability. Modi suggested that a well-timed rate cut could stimulate consumption and enhance credit demand across various sectors.
Rohit Arora, CEO and Co-Founder of Biz2X and Biz2Credit, echoed this sentiment, noting that the financial markets are increasingly pricing in a 25-basis point reduction. He believes that the upcoming policy review presents a significant opportunity for the RBI to adopt a more supportive monetary stance, especially as inflation continues to decline.
Arguments Against a Rate Cut
Despite calls for a rate cut, a report from Bank of Baroda indicates that the RBI may choose to maintain the repo rate at 5.50% and uphold its neutral stance. The report highlights that India’s economic performance has exceeded expectations, with GDP growth remaining robust. Urban consumption and resilient rural demand are projected to sustain this momentum into the third quarter, while private investment shows signs of recovery, aided by an increase in credit demand.
On the inflation front, the report notes a significant decline in CPI inflation, although core inflation remains above 4%, primarily due to rising gold prices. The report suggests that while there is room for a rate cut, the RBI is likely to proceed cautiously, given the strength of economic growth. Maintaining the current rate would allow the central bank to assess the effects of previous cuts fully. The RBI may consider additional monetary support later if challenges related to tariffs persist.
Upcoming MPC Meeting
The MPC is scheduled to convene from December 3 to 5, with the policy decision set to be announced on December 5 at 10 AM by RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. As the meeting approaches, the economic community remains keenly interested in the central bank’s decision, which could have significant implications for India’s economic trajectory in the coming months.
