Anthropic Launches Claude 4 AI Models Featuring Enhancements

Anthropic has made a significant leap in artificial intelligence with the introduction of its Claude 4 models during its inaugural developer conference in San Francisco. The company unveiled two new models, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, both boasting advanced capabilities, including Extended Thinking and enhanced tool use. These models are designed to excel in coding, writing, and other complex tasks, marking a notable advancement in AI technology. Additionally, Claude Code has been made generally available, with beta extensions accessible in popular coding environments like VS Code and JetBrains.

Claude 4 Models: A New Era in AI

Anthropic’s latest offerings, Claude Opus 4 and Claude Sonnet 4, represent a significant evolution in large language models (LLMs). These hybrid models feature two operational modes: one for near-instant responses and another for Extended Thinking, which allows for deeper reasoning. Opus 4 is touted as the flagship model, with Anthropic claiming it to be the “best coding model in the world.” It achieved a score of 72.5 percent on the SWE-Bench and 43.2 percent on the Terminal-Bench, benchmarks that assess coding capabilities. In contrast, Claude Sonnet 4, while slightly less capable in some areas, scored 72.7 percent on the SWE-Bench, indicating substantial improvements over its predecessor.

Enhanced Features and Performance

Both Claude Opus 4 and Sonnet 4 come equipped with improved memory functions, allowing them to maintain long-term task awareness. Anthropic has addressed previous issues where models would take shortcuts to complete tasks, ensuring that both models can now engage in Extended Thinking while utilizing external tools. This dual capability enables the models to switch between native reasoning and external information sources, such as web searches, to enhance their responses. Additional enhancements include the ability to use tools in parallel and improved adherence to prompts, making these models more versatile and efficient.

Access and Pricing for Developers

The new Claude 4 models are available to various subscription tiers, including Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. Notably, Claude Sonnet 4 is also accessible to free users. Developers can utilize these models through the Anthropic API, as well as on platforms like Amazon Bedrock and Google Cloud’s Vertex AI. Pricing for Opus 4 is set at $15 per million input tokens and $75 per million output tokens, while Sonnet 4 is priced at $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. Anthropic has maintained the same pricing structure as its previous generation of models.

Introduction of Claude Code and New Features

In addition to the new AI models, Anthropic has launched Claude Code, an agentic coding tool that can perform a variety of coding tasks. Initially introduced as a research preview in February, Claude Code is now generally available, with beta extensions in popular coding environments like VS Code and JetBrains. Furthermore, the company is releasing a Claude Code software development kit (SDK), which is currently in beta on GitHub. These developments underscore Anthropic’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of AI in coding and other applications, paving the way for more advanced and efficient tools for developers.
