Ambuja Cements Empowers Marwar Mundwa Family Through Integrated CSR Initiatives
Ambuja Cements is making a significant impact in the rural landscape of Rajasthan through its comprehensive Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs. A compelling case study highlighting this initiative is the transformation of the Mehboob Ali family in Marwar Mundwa, demonstrating how targeted interventions can lead to substantial improvements in quality of life.
A Path from Dependence to Independence
The Mehboob Ali family previously relied solely on rain-fed agriculture on a small piece of land, struggling to meet their basic needs. In a bid to uplift their economic status, Mehboob took the initiative to enroll in a three-month Mason Training Course offered by Ambuja’s Skill and Entrepreneurship Development Institute (SEDI) in Nagaur in 2005. Post-training, his endeavor as a small civil contractor flourished, enabling him to earn approximately ₹50,000 monthly while also contributing to community development by partnering with Ambuja Foundation.
Innovations for Water Sustainability
In extension of their support, in 2015, the Ambuja Cements CSR program provided the family with a 5,000-litre Rooftop Rainwater Harvesting Structure (RRWHS). This vital infrastructure ensures that the family has access to clean drinking water throughout the year, significantly easing the burden on family members, particularly the women, who previously needed to travel long distances to fetch water.
Empowering the Next Generation
Recognizing the importance of skill development for the entire family, Mehboob’s elder son, Aslam, completed his training in Retail at SEDI Nagaur, leading to a monthly income of ₹18,000 while working at the Ambuja Cements plant in Marwar Mundwa. His younger sibling, Azruddin, is also on track to start his career with ongoing training in the Assistant Electrician trade at the same institute.
Women’s Empowerment and Community Revitalization
Additionally, Mehboob’s wife, Kheruna, has become part of a Self-Help Group (SHG) named ‘Firoza’ in 2020, which enabled her to revive their traditional cotton quilt business. With a small loan of ₹30,000, she now produces quilts and mattresses, supplementing the family’s income through various stitching projects.
