Amazon Prime Video Launches Limited Ad Experience in India

Amazon Prime Video is set to introduce limited advertisements in India starting June 17, 2025. This change will affect subscribers as they watch their favorite films and TV shows on the platform. While Amazon assures that the number of ads will be significantly lower than those on traditional TV and other streaming services, viewers who prefer an uninterrupted experience can opt for a new ad-free plan, which will come at an additional cost.

Limited Ads on Amazon Prime Video

Beginning June 17, 2025, Amazon Prime Video will implement limited advertisements during content streaming in India. This announcement was made via an email to subscribers, highlighting the company’s intention to enhance its investment in quality content over time. The ads will appear while users enjoy movies and series, but Amazon has committed to ensuring that the frequency of these ads will be “meaningfully” less than what viewers encounter on traditional television and competing streaming platforms.

Importantly, current Prime membership prices will remain unchanged, and subscribers will not need to take any action to experience this new feature. For those who prefer to avoid ads altogether, Amazon will offer an opt-in plan starting on the same date. This new plan will be an add-on to existing subscriptions, costing Rs. 129 per month or Rs. 699 per year. Previously, advertisements on Prime Video were limited to select countries, including Australia, Canada, and the UK, with India being the latest market to see this change.

Amazon Prime Subscription Benefits and Pricing

In India, an Amazon Prime subscription is available for Rs. 1,499 annually. Customers can also choose from one-month and three-month plans priced at Rs. 299 and Rs. 599, respectively. The subscription offers a variety of benefits, including same-day and one-day delivery options, free shipping with no minimum order requirement, and cashback on purchases made with select cards. Additionally, subscribers gain early access to lightning deals and can enjoy other Amazon services such as Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Gaming, and Prime Reading.

For those seeking a more budget-friendly option, Amazon provides a Prime Lite plan at Rs. 799 for a year. However, this plan limits Prime Video access to mobile devices only and restricts video resolution to a maximum of 720p, making it less appealing for users who prefer larger screens.

Impact on Current Subscribers

The introduction of ads on Amazon Prime Video is expected to primarily impact regular Prime members. Those subscribed to the Prime Lite plan, which already features ad-supported content, will not experience any changes. This move aligns with Amazon’s strategy to enhance its content offerings while maintaining a competitive edge in the streaming market. By introducing ads, the company aims to generate additional revenue that can be reinvested into producing high-quality programming for its viewers.

As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, Amazon’s decision to incorporate advertisements reflects a broader trend among streaming services to balance content costs with subscriber expectations. While some users may welcome the option to opt-out of ads for a fee, others may find the introduction of advertisements a shift in their viewing experience.
