Air India to Organize Relief Flights Following Ahmedabad Plane Crash

After a tragic incident involving Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, the airline has announced relief flights from Delhi and Mumbai to Ahmedabad. The aircraft, which was en route to London with 242 individuals on board, crashed into a residential area shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. The crash is believed to have resulted in multiple fatalities, prompting Air India to take swift action to assist the families of those affected.

Details of the Relief Flights

In response to the devastating crash, Air India is organizing two relief flights to facilitate travel for the next of kin of passengers and airline staff. One flight will depart from Delhi, while the other will come from Mumbai. The flight from Delhi, designated IX1555, is scheduled to leave at 11:00 PM on June 12, while the return flight, IX1556, will depart from Ahmedabad at 1:10 AM on June 13. Similarly, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad flight, AI1402, will also take off at 11:00 PM on June 12, with its return flight, AI1409, scheduled for 1:15 AM on June 13. Air India has provided a hotline for families wishing to travel on these flights, with dedicated numbers for those in India and those arriving from international locations.

Passenger Manifest and Emergency Response

The passenger manifest for flight AI 171 included a diverse group of individuals, comprising 169 Indians, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese citizens, and one Canadian. Additionally, there were 12 airline staff members on board, including two pilots and ten cabin crew. Shortly after takeoff, at approximately 1:39 PM, the aircraft’s pilot issued a ‘Mayday’ emergency signal, indicating a critical situation. Recovery teams are currently engaged in efforts to locate the aircraft’s black box, which contains vital flight data and cockpit voice recordings that could shed light on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Crash Details and Investigation

Witnesses reported that the aircraft was seen rapidly descending before it erupted into flames, creating a thick plume of black smoke that could be seen from afar. Aviation experts noted that the plane had only reached an altitude of 600 to 800 feet before its sudden descent. The aircraft, which had been in service for 11 years, is now the focus of an investigation aimed at understanding the factors that led to this tragic event. The investigation will likely take into account the emergency signal transmitted by the pilot and the aircraft’s descent pattern prior to the crash.
