Aadhaar Card Applications and Updates: UIDAI’s Strategy to Combat Issues
The Unique Identity Authority of India (UIDAI) is taking significant steps to combat rising incidents of Aadhaar-related fraud. UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar announced the implementation of stricter verification processes and advanced technologies to enhance the integrity of the Aadhaar system. These measures aim to address issues such as fraudulent modifications of personal details and the misuse of biometric data, ensuring that the Aadhaar card remains a reliable form of identification.
Strengthening Verification Processes
UIDAI is set to bolster its verification processes by cross-referencing information with various official databases. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to prevent fraudulent activities associated with Aadhaar cards. The authority plans to employ advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), to detect discrepancies in photographs and biometric data. By digitalizing the Aadhaar application process, UIDAI aims to streamline the verification of documents, requiring all states to adopt online systems for document verification.
Bhuvnesh Kumar emphasized that any changes to birth dates must be supported by modifications in the original birth certificate, as secondary certificates will not be accepted. UIDAI has established direct connections with original databases from 35 states over the past six months, allowing for real-time verification of documents such as PAN cards and CBSE marksheets. This approach ensures that any document submitted for Aadhaar enrollment or updates is verified directly from its source, significantly reducing the chances of fraud.
Advanced Technology to Combat Biometric Fraud
To further enhance security, UIDAI has implemented AI and ML algorithms designed to verify authentic fingerprints. This technology helps prevent biometric fraud by ensuring that only ‘live’ fingerprints are accepted during the enrollment process. Additionally, AI-powered cameras are being utilized for age assessments, which helps prevent older individuals from applying for Aadhaar cards intended for children that do not require biometric data.
Kumar noted that the authority is also considering limiting the frequency of fingerprint updates. While elderly individuals may need updates due to changes in their fingerprints, frequent updates for younger applicants are deemed unnecessary. The UIDAI chief highlighted instances of attempted fraud where individuals combined hand and foot biometrics or mixed their biometric data with others to create unique combinations. The integration of AI/ML technology is expected to detect such irregularities effectively.
Strict Protocols for Non-Citizen Applicants
UIDAI maintains stringent protocols for non-citizens seeking Aadhaar cards. Applicants must complete a mandatory 180-day residence period and apply under the appropriate category. In the last six months, UIDAI has rejected 1,456 applications from individuals who attempted to apply in the Indian category without meeting the necessary residency requirements. Kumar reiterated the importance of adhering to these protocols to maintain the integrity of the Aadhaar system.
