Life and Career

Sanjay Kumar was born on March 3, 1976, in Bilaspur village, in the Una district of Himachal Pradesh, India.

He hailed from a humble background and grew up in a small town. His early education was in local schools in Himachal Pradesh, where he exhibited qualities of discipline and leadership from a young age.

Sanjay Kumar joined the Indian Army at the age of 16, showing exceptional determination and a strong sense of patriotism. He was commissioned into the 13th Battalion of the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles, a regiment known for its bravery and contributions to the nation’s defense.

During the Kargil War in 1999, Sanjay Kumar’s unit was assigned the challenging task of capturing strategic heights in the Mushkoh Valley. On July 4, 1999, he led his team in an assault on Area Flat Top, a well-fortified enemy position at an altitude of 15,000 feet. Despite facing heavy enemy fire, Sanjay Kumar displayed exceptional leadership, courage, and tactical acumen.

Under his inspiring leadership, the team managed to capture Flat Top, but the success was short-lived. The enemy launched a counterattack, and during the fierce hand-to-hand combat that ensued, Sanjay Kumar eliminated three enemy soldiers in close combat. Despite being injured, he continued to lead and motivate his men, securing the position at a great personal cost.

Award and Legacy

Sanjay Kumar was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India’s highest military decoration for exceptional acts of valor during wartime. The Param Vir Chakra was conferred on him in recognition of his outstanding courage, leadership, and sacrifice during the Kargil War in 1999.
