TRIFED Partners with NIFT and HPMC for Tribal Marketing

In a groundbreaking initiative, the Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Ltd (TRIFED) has shifted its focus from a Business-to-Consumer (B2C) model to a Business-to-Business (B2B) approach for tribal marketing. This strategic move aims to enhance the market for tribal products and support tribal businesses across India. On February 24, 2025, TRIFED signed Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation Ltd (HPMC) in New Delhi. This partnership marks a significant step in promoting tribal artisans and their products.
The Significance of the MoUs
The signing of the MoUs took place during the โAadi Mahotsavโ festival at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, which ran from February 16 to 24, 2025. The event was inaugurated by the President of India, Smt. Droupadi Murmu, and attended by key figures such as Shri Jual Oram, the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs. The MoUs were exchanged between TRIFED officials and their counterparts from NIFT and HPMC, highlighting the collaborative effort to uplift tribal communities.
The MoU with NIFT focuses on product curation and design development for handloom and handicraft items created by tribal artisans. This partnership aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal and marketability of these products, making them more competitive in the broader market. On the other hand, the agreement with HPMC will leverage technology to improve the processing and marketing of horticultural and minor forest products. This dual approach is expected to create new opportunities for tribal businesses, allowing them to thrive in a competitive environment.
Enhancing Tribal Artisans’ Skills and Products
One of the primary objectives of the partnership with NIFT is to empower tribal artisans through skill development. By providing training in design and product development, NIFT aims to help artisans create high-quality products that can attract a wider audience. This initiative will not only enhance the artisans’ skills but also increase their income potential.
The collaboration will also focus on sustainable practices. By promoting eco-friendly materials and traditional techniques, the partnership aims to preserve the rich cultural heritage of tribal communities. This approach aligns with the growing global demand for sustainable and ethically sourced products. As a result, tribal artisans will not only gain recognition for their craftsmanship but also contribute to environmental conservation.
The Role of HPMC in Supporting Tribal Businesses
Himachal Pradesh Horticulture Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation Ltd (HPMC) plays a crucial role in this partnership by providing technological support and expertise in horticulture. Established in 1974, HPMC has been instrumental in marketing and processing horticultural produce in Himachal Pradesh. Through this collaboration, HPMC will assist tribal communities in improving the quality and processing of their horticultural products.
The partnership aims to enhance the supply chain for tribal products, ensuring that they reach consumers efficiently. By improving processing techniques, HPMC will help tribal farmers and artisans increase their product value. This will lead to better prices for their goods, ultimately improving their livelihoods. The collaboration is expected to create a more robust market for tribal products, benefiting both producers and consumers.
