Thailand Celebrates Historic Equal Marriage Law

As Thailand ushers in a new era of equality, the long-awaited equal marriage law takes effect, marking a significant milestone for the LGBTQ+ community. On Thursday, police officer Pisit “Kew” Sirihirunchai and his partner Chanatip “Jane” Sirihirunchai are eager to be among the first couples to register their marriage. This momentous occasion is not just a personal victory for them but a collective triumph for many same-sex couples across the nation. Approximately 180 couples are set to register their unions at a grand event in one of Bangkok’s most prominent shopping malls, organized with the support of city officials.

A Long-Awaited Dream Realized

For Pisit and Chanatip, this day has been a long time coming. They have been together for seven years and have eagerly anticipated the legal recognition of their relationship. “We have been ready for such a long time,” Pisit expressed, highlighting their patience as they awaited the law’s support. The couple has already taken steps to formalize their bond, including seeking blessings from a Buddhist monk and signing a letter of intent with local officials.

The new law grants same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples, allowing them to marry, manage assets, inherit property, and adopt children. It also enables partners to make medical decisions for each other in times of illness and to extend financial benefits, such as pensions, to their spouses. Pisit envisions a future filled with possibilities, including building a home and starting a small business together. “We want to build our future together and take care of each other,” he said, reflecting the hopes of many couples now empowered by this legal change.

A Journey of Advocacy and Change

While the new law is a cause for celebration, it is essential to recognize the long journey that led to this moment. Despite Thailand’s reputation for tolerance towards LGBTQ+ individuals, activists have fought tirelessly for legal recognition. Rungtiwa Thangkanopast, a 59-year-old woman who plans to marry her partner of 18 years, recalls the struggles faced by the community. “We’ve been waiting for this day for 18 years,” she said, emphasizing the importance of public recognition.

In 2013, Rungtiwa and her partner attempted to register their marriage at a district office known as “Love Town.” They were met with refusal and ridicule from the media, which used derogatory terms to describe their efforts. However, their determination, along with that of many others, eventually led to a shift in public attitudes. The rise of progressive political parties advocating for LGBTQ+ rights played a crucial role in changing perceptions and garnering support for marriage equality.

Legal Recognition and Future Challenges

The new equal marriage law represents a significant step forward, but challenges remain. While the law replaces gender-specific terms in the Thai Civil Code with neutral language, many legal provisions still define parents as a mother and a father. Additionally, same-sex couples face obstacles in accessing surrogacy and other family-building options. Activists continue to advocate for further changes to ensure that all aspects of the law reflect gender neutrality.

For couples like Rungtiwa and her partner Phanlavee, the law brings legitimacy to their family. “With this law comes the legitimacy of our family,” Rungtiwa stated, expressing relief that their daughter will be raised in a legally recognized family unit. The law’s passage, which received overwhelming support in parliament, signifies a broader acceptance of same-sex relationships in Thai society.

As Thailand stands out as a leader in Asia for recognizing marriage equality, the journey is far from over. Activists remain committed to pushing for comprehensive reforms that address the remaining legal gaps. The new law is a historic achievement, but it is also a reminder of the work that lies ahead to ensure full equality for all.
