The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has also issued a policy circular aimed at improving road safety in foggy conditions. This includes the installation of delineators, cat’s eyes, retro-reflective tapes, and crash barriers along national highways. Such measures are designed to prevent accidents and enhance the overall safety of road users.
Immediate Medical Assistance for Accident Victims
In a bid to provide timely medical care to road accident victims, the government has launched a pilot program in several states, including Chandigarh, Haryana, and Punjab. This initiative offers cashless treatment for victims of motor vehicle accidents. Collaborating with the National Health Authority, the program provides health benefit packages for trauma care at empaneled hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Eligible victims can receive treatment worth up to Rs. 1.5 lakh for a maximum of seven days following an accident. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden on victims and ensure they receive necessary medical attention promptly. Furthermore, ambulances are deployed by NHAI in service areas along national highways to assist in emergencies, ensuring that help is always within reach.
Protecting Good Samaritans
The government has also recognized the importance of Good Samaritans—individuals who assist accident victims without expecting any reward. New rules have been established to protect these compassionate citizens. Good Samaritans often provide crucial first aid or transport victims to hospitals, playing a vital role in saving lives.
These protections encourage more people to help accident victims without fear of legal repercussions. By fostering a culture of assistance, the government aims to create a safer environment for all road users. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to promote road safety awareness and encourage community involvement in emergency situations.
Raising Awareness Through Advocacy
To complement these regulatory measures, the government is actively promoting road safety awareness. A Road Safety Advocacy Scheme has been introduced to educate the public about safe driving practices.
