Empowering Divyangjans: New Initiatives Launched
The Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE), celebrated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities 2024 with a significant event in New Delhi. Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar unveiled 16 innovative initiatives aimed at empowering Divyangjans, or persons with disabilities, across India. The event attracted dignitaries, senior officials, and stakeholders from the disability sector. It also showcased cultural performances by talented Divyangjan artists, highlighting their resilience and creativity.
Commitment to Inclusion and Empowerment
During the event, Dr. Virendra Kumar emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to fostering an inclusive society. He stated, โThis momentous occasion reflects our dedication to creating an inclusive society. Through these initiatives, we aim to ensure equal opportunities, accessibility, and empowerment for every Divyangjan.โ The minister reiterated the importance of upholding the rights and dignity of individuals with disabilities. He expressed hope that these initiatives would bring India closer to achieving a truly inclusive and accessible society.
Shri Rajesh Aggarwal, Secretary of DEPwD, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an empowered society for persons with disabilities. He noted that each initiative is a step toward dismantling barriers and opening new avenues of opportunity. โThese initiatives embody the Government’s vision of an equitable India, where every individual, regardless of ability, can lead a life of dignity and self-reliance,โ he added. This collective effort aims to ensure that Divyangjans have the necessary resources and support to thrive in society.
Key Initiatives for Empowerment
The event highlighted several key initiatives designed to empower Divyangjans. One notable initiative is the Sugamya Bharat Abhiyan, which introduces an online platform for the empanelment of accessibility auditors. This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to creating inclusive infrastructure across the country. Another significant program is the Sugamya Bharat Yatra, where Divyangjans will assess the accessibility of public spaces using the AI-enabled “Yes to Access” app. This initiative encourages active participation from the disability community in evaluating and improving public accessibility.
Additionally, the Pathways to Access โ Part 3 Compendium was launched. This compendium highlights essential government documents related to employment, financial services, and healthcare for persons with disabilities. It aims to empower individuals with knowledge and access to vital resources. Other noteworthy initiatives include the development of High-Power Spectacles for individuals with low vision and the Kadam Knee Joint, an indigenous innovation that enhances mobility. These initiatives showcase the government’s commitment to improving the quality of life for Divyangjans through innovative solutions.
Enhancing Education and Employment Opportunities
Education and employment are crucial areas for the empowerment of Divyangjans. The event introduced several initiatives aimed at bridging the gap between education and employment. The Employability Skills Book, released in 11 Indian languages, serves as a valuable resource for Divyangjans, promoting economic independence. Furthermore, a significant partnership with Infosys BPM was announced to enhance employment opportunities through the PM DAKSH portalโs Divyangjan Rozgar Setu initiative.
In collaboration with Yunikee, the Infosys Springboard Skill Programme aims to empower deaf learners across India. This program offers courses that help young deaf individuals develop marketable skills. Once certified, these learners can explore freelancing opportunities, apply for jobs, or even start their own businesses. The goal is to empower 10,000 learners within the next year.
Moreover, the launch of accessible storybooks in Braille, audio, and large print formats promotes inclusive education. The Braille Books Portal and the introduction of a standardized Braille code in 13 Indian languages further enhance educational resources for Divyangjans. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to ensuring that individuals with disabilities have access to quality education and employment opportunities, paving the way for a more inclusive society.
