Shri Prashant Kumar Singh, Secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, announced that renewable energy will play a major role in India’s power industry in the coming years. He shared this at the Brainstorming Conclave organized by the Central Electricity Authority in New Delhi. The conclave discussed the future of the Indian Power Sector by 2047. Shri Singh mentioned that India’s renewable energy capacity, which was 76 gigawatts (GW) in 2014, has now reached nearly 210 GW. By 2030, India aims to achieve 500 GW of renewable energy.
Solar Power Leading the Way
Shri Prashant Kumar Singh emphasized that solar energy will contribute most to this growth. In 2014, India’s solar energy capacity was only 2.6 GW, but now it has grown to 91 GW. Experts believe this capacity could reach 300 GW by 2030. Government initiatives like PM Surya Ghar and PM KUSUM are boosting solar energy demand.
The solar power module manufacturing industry has also expanded. In 2014, India could only manufacture 2 GW of solar power modules. Today, it can produce 60 GW, and this number is expected to exceed 100 GW by 2030.
Growth in Solar Cell Manufacturing
India has seen significant progress in the solar cell manufacturing sector as well. In 2014, India’s manufacturing capacity was only 1 GW. Today, it has grown to 8-10 GW, and by March 2025, it is expected to reach 20 GW. By 2030, the target is to produce more than 70 GW of solar cells.
From 2014 to 2023, ₹8.5 lakh crore has been invested in the renewable energy sector. At the recent ReInvest event hosted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), public sector banks and financial institutions promised to invest ₹25 lakh crore in renewable energy projects by 2030.
Green Hydrogen and PLI Schemes: A Key Focus
Shri Prashant Kumar Singh also spoke about important initiatives like the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme and the Green Hydrogen Mission. He encouraged businesses to work together to make progress in the green hydrogen sector. India has set a goal of producing 7.7 metric tonnes of green hydrogen by 2030. This includes building 15 GW of electrolyser capacity.
He also mentioned that India’s focus on research and development is growing. For example, the National Physical Laboratory has developed a reference solar cell, which is a major achievement for the renewable energy sector.
Brainstorming Conclave on India’s Power Sector
The Brainstorming Conclave on the future of India’s power sector by 2047 was opened by Union Minister of Power, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar. The event was held in New Delhi and was attended by policymakers, ministers, and industry experts. The conclave was organized to allow discussions and collaborations on how to build a strong and sustainable power sector for the future.
Conclusion
As India continues to grow its renewable energy sector, solar energy is expected to play a leading role. The government’s initiatives, along with private investments, are working towards achieving India’s ambitious goals for 2030 and beyond. With more focus on green hydrogen and new technologies, India is on its way to creating a sustainable and resilient power sector that will lead the world.
