Transshipment Cargo

In FY22 our country’s total transshipment cargo was approximately 4.6 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent units), of which approximately 4.2 million TEU was handled outside India.

The initiatives taken by the government to develop transshipment hubs in India are as follows:

(i) The Cochin Port Authority (CoPA) has developed the International Container Transshipment Terminal at Vallarpadam in Cochin.

(ii) The Government of Kerala is developing Vizhinjam International Seaport Limited, mainly to cater for container transhipment.

(iii) Galathea Bay in Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands has been identified for the development of an international container transshipment port.

This information was given today by the Union Minister for Ports, Navigation and Waterways, Shri Sarbananda Sonowal, in a written response to the Lok Sabha.
