Telecom Services Restored Post-Cyclone Arnab in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is actively collaborating with Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to restore crucial communication services in areas impacted by Cyclone Arnab along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Intense rainfall, flash floods, and power outages have disrupted telecom services, necessitating urgent action to ensure connectivity for affected residents.

Recovery Efforts Across Affected Regions

Significant advancements have been made in restoring telecom network connectivity throughout Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. The focus remains on addressing power supply challenges and repairing optical fibre links to facilitate uninterrupted communication. Emergency measures, such as Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) and Cell on Wheels (COW) deployments, are in place to support both citizens and ongoing relief initiatives.

Telecom Network Availability in Andhra Pradesh

As of now, telecom service availability in Andhra Pradesh has reached an impressive 99.18 percent. Specific districts have reported varying connectivity levels: West Godavari achieves 98.5 percent, while Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Konaseema is at 91.96 percent. Localised disruptions caused by commercial power outages and Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) damage continue to impact certain areas. The ICR system is fully operational, allowing users to connect with other networks even if their primary provider’s services are unavailable. Additionally, 11 COWs have been dispatched to bolster emergency communication capabilities.

Restoration Efforts in Odisha

In Odisha, the situation is gradually improving as rainfall subsides and floodwaters recede, particularly in Ganjam, Gajapati, and Kandhamal districts. TSPs are now ramping up restoration efforts, resulting in improved network connectivity and fewer service interruptions. All telecommunications providers are prioritising the restoration of remaining sites to ensure swift normalisation of services for the public.

Understanding Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR)

Intra-Circle Roaming (ICR) allows mobile users to access another operator’s network within the same region, enabling them to receive services even when their original provider’s signal is unavailable. This system is particularly vital during emergencies when infrastructure may be compromised. To ensure seamless connectivity via ICR during such times, users should keep the “Automatic Network Selection” feature enabled on their devices. If a connection fails, they can manually choose an available network through their phone’s settings.
