Yousuf Karsh (December 23, 1908 – July 13, 2002) was an Armenian-Canadian photographer known for his portraits of notable individuals. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest portrait photographers of the 20th century.

Early Life and Education

Karsh was born on December 23, 1908, in Mardin, Diyarbekir Vilayet (present-day Mardin Province, Turkey) to Ottoman Armenian parents Amsih Karsh, a weaver and importer of artisanal goods, and Bahia Nakash, daughter of an engraver. He had two brothers, Jamil and Malak. Growing up during the Armenian genocide, Karsh experienced displacement, starvation, and violence. In 1922, his family escaped to a refugee camp in Aleppo, Syria after a month-long journey with a Kurdish caravan.

At age fifteen, Karsh immigrated to Canada in 1923 as part of a humanitarian initiative to reunite displaced Armenians with relatives. He arrived in Halifax on December 31, 1923, and moved to Sherbrooke, Quebec to live with his maternal uncle George Nakashian, a portrait photographer. Karsh attended Sherbrooke High School for one year before his formal education ended. His uncle gave him a Box Brownie camera and taught him photography fundamentals.

Career and Achievements

In 1928, Karsh traveled to Boston to apprentice under John H. Garo, a prominent portrait photographer and member of the Armenian diaspora. During this apprenticeship, he developed technical proficiency and learned the social skills needed to photograph prominent figures. When his work papers expired in 1931, he returned to Canada and settled in Ottawa, initially working for photographer John Powis before opening his first studio in 1932 at 130 Sparks Street.

Karsh’s breakthrough came through his connection with Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King, who arranged photography sessions with visiting dignitaries. He was introduced to the Rideau Hall social circle and photographed Lord Bessborough, Governor General from 1931 to 1935, and his wife—portraits that were widely published. Karsh became a member of the Ottawa Camera Club and exhibited in International Salon of Photography exhibitions at the National Gallery of Canada beginning in 1934. He remained at his Sparks Street studio until 1972, when he moved to the Château Laurier.

Karsh’s signature style featured dramatic lighting and careful preparation. Before each sitting, he researched his subjects, spoke with them, and often incorporated props emblematic of their professions. His involvement with the Ottawa Little Theatre shaped both his technical approach and professional network, providing access to broader cultural and political circles.

Notable Events and Milestones

Karsh’s most iconic photograph, titled The Roaring Lion, was taken on December 30, 1941, in the Speaker’s Chamber of the House of Commons in Ottawa. The image of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, captured moments after he addressed the Canadian Senate and House of Commons, brought Karsh international recognition and marked a major turning point in his career. This photograph became his most celebrated work.

Throughout his career, Karsh photographed prominent figures from politics, culture, and society. More than 20 of his photographs appeared on the cover of Life magazine. He retired in 1992, having established himself as a photographer of choice for the world’s most notable individuals.
