Annabel Croft: From Tennis Champion to Television Presenter
Annabel Nicola Croft (born 12 July 1966) is a British former professional tennis player and current radio and television presenter. She won the WTA Tour event Virginia Slims of San Diego and represented Great Britain in the Fed Cup and the Wightman Cup.
Early Life and Education
Croft was born in Farnborough, Kent. Her father James was educated at Sutton Valence School in Kent and became a chartered surveyor, working for Richard Ellis, now known as CBRE Group. Her mother was Susan Templer of Higham, Kent; they married in June 1963. The family lived in Bickley. Croft was coached by Derek Bone during her formative years.
Career and Achievements
Croft’s tennis career began with success in junior tournaments. She won the Wimbledon and Australian Open girls’ tournaments in 1984, then captured the Virginia Slims of San Diego title in 1985, defeating Wendy Turnbull in straight sets. In December 1985, she achieved a world ranking of 24. She represented Great Britain in the Fed Cup in 1985 and 1986, and competed in the Wightman Cup from 1983 to 1986. Despite her potential as a top-25 player, Croft retired from professional tennis at age twenty-one in early 1988, citing exhaustion from constant travel and diminished enjoyment of the sport.
After leaving professional tennis, Croft transitioned to television presenting. She became the new face of Channel 4’s Treasure Hunt following Anneka Rice, and later hosted her own ITV show, Interceptor. In 1990, she released a fitness video called Annabel Croft’s Shape Tape. She has provided coverage of Wimbledon Tennis Championship for the BBC, BBC Radio 5 Live, and GMTV, and worked as a tennis pundit for Sky Sports and Eurosport. She presented Sky Sports coverage of the 2012 US Open and co-hosted Game, Set & Mats on Eurosport in 2015 with former tennis player Mats Wilander.

In June 2009, she participated in a BBC series called Famous, Rich and Homeless about living without money on London’s streets, followed by a BBC Radio 5 Live programme in December 2009 titled James: My Alcoholic Friend. In November 2011, she hosted the AIB Media Excellence Awards for Eurosport. In October 2012, she co-founded DiaryDoll with television presenter Carol Smillie, a company producing waterproof pants designed for periods, post-maternity recovery, and pelvic-floor weakness. In 2005, she appeared on and won the ITV programme Celebrity Wrestling. Most recently, between September and December 2023, she competed in the twenty-first series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Johannes Radebe, finishing in fourth place.
