Larry Hagman (September 21, 1931 – November 23, 2012) was an American actor best known for playing ruthless oil baron J. R. Ewing in the primetime television soap opera Dallas and Major Anthony Nelson in the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie. He became one of television’s most recognizable faces through these two signature roles spanning decades.
Early Life and Education
Larry Martin Hagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas. His mother, Mary Martin, became a Broadway actress and musical comedy star after his birth. His father, Benjamin Jackson Hagman, of Swedish descent, was an accountant and lawyer who worked as a district attorney. When his parents divorced in 1936, Hagman lived with his maternal grandmother, Juanita Presley Martin, in Texas and California while his mother pursued her career with Paramount.
Hagman attended Black-Foxe Military Institute and briefly Woodstock Country School in Vermont. After his grandmother’s death, he joined his mother in New York City. In 1946, he returned to Weatherford and graduated from Weatherford High School in 1949. He attended Bard College in New York, majoring in dance and drama, but left after one year to pursue acting professionally.
Career and Achievements
Hagman began his career in 1950 at Margaret Webster’s school at the Woodstock Playhouse in Woodstock, New York. That summer, he worked as a production assistant and actor in Margo Jones’s theater company in Dallas. He performed in The Taming of the Shrew in New York City and toured with St. John Terrell’s Music Circus in Florida and New Jersey. In 1951, he appeared in the London production of South Pacific alongside his mother for nearly a year.
After enlisting in the United States Air Force in 1952, Hagman spent his service entertaining U.S. troops in the United Kingdom and Europe. Returning to New York in 1956, he appeared in off-Broadway productions before making his Broadway debut in 1958 in Comes a Day. He went on to appear in four other Broadway plays: God and Kate Murphy, The Nervous Set, The Warm Peninsula, and The Beauty Part.
Hagman’s first television role came in 1957 on the syndicated crime drama Decoy. Throughout the late 1950s and early 1960s, he appeared on numerous television programs including Harbourmaster, Sea Hunt, Diagnosis: Unknown, The Edge of Night (where he played Ed Gibson for two years), and The Defenders. He made his film debut in 1964 in Ensign Pulver and that same year appeared in the Cold War thriller Fail Safe.
Notable Events and Milestones
In 1965, Hagman was cast as Major Anthony Nelson in the NBC situation comedy I Dream of Jeannie, opposite Barbara Eden. The show ran for five seasons until 1970 and entered the top 30 in its first year. Two reunion movies were made in 1985 and 1991, though Hagman did not appear in either. He reunited with his I Dream of Jeannie co-stars on multiple occasions, including appearances on The Donny and Marie Show in 1999, Larry King Live in 2002, the TV Land Awards in 2004, and the Chiller Expo Show in 2005.
Hagman’s most iconic role began in 1978 when he was cast as J. R. Ewing in Dallas, the primetime soap opera that ran until 1991. The character made him a household name. Beyond acting, Hagman worked as a television producer and director. In 1995, he underwent a life-saving liver transplant. He made a reprise of his J. R. Ewing role on the 2012 revival of Dallas before his death later that year.
