Judge Amogh Kaloti: Central Figure in Tata Dispute Resolution
MUMBAI: Amogh Kaloti, a low-profile district judge recently appointed as Maharashtra’s charity commissioner, has emerged as a key figure in a high-stakes corporate dispute involving the Tata Group. Previously known mainly within Maharashtra’s legal circles, Kaloti was thrust into the spotlight after directing the Sir Ratan Tata Trust to halt board meetings and initiating an investigation into the trusts that control 66.4% of the Tata Group, following a complaint from Venu Srinivasan.
Kaloti, a 50-year-old bureaucrat with a legal background, has served in various judicial roles since his appointment as a district and assistant sessions judge in 2013. He has held positions in Buldhana, Mumbai, and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, and was the principal district and sessions judge in Washim. Known for his reserved demeanor and adherence to legal protocols, Kaloti’s decisions are closely watched as he navigates this complex case.
As charity commissioner, Kaloti oversees a quasi-judicial authority established under the Maharashtra Public Trusts Act of 1950. His responsibilities include registering trusts, investigating financial misconduct, and managing hospital charity beds. Although he has ruled on one Tata-related matter—validating a share transfer from the Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust to Naval Tata in 1989—two additional complaints remain pending. These involve issues raised by Venu Srinivasan regarding the number of permanent trustees on the Sir Ratan Tata Trust board and a complaint from Mehli Mistry seeking a probe into the governance practices of the trusts.
