Carolyn Beug: Filmmaker and September 11 Victim
Carolyn Ann Mayer-Beug (December 11, 1952 – September 11, 2001) was an American filmmaker and video producer from Santa Monica, California. She died in the September 11 attacks as a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11.
Early Life and Education
Carolyn was born Carolyn Ann Wahlstrom on December 11, 1952. She lived in a Tudor-style home in the North 25th Street neighborhood of Santa Monica. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Career and Achievements
Beug worked as a video producer and filmmaker, establishing herself in the music video industry during the 1980s and 1990s. She directed three music videos for country singer Dwight Yoakam: “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” and “A Thousand Miles from Nowhere,” which she co-directed with Yoakam, and “Fast as You,” which she directed alone. Her work on the Van Halen music video “Right Now” earned her an MTV Video Music Award. Beyond music videos, Beug served as senior vice president of Walt Disney Records, a significant position in the entertainment industry.
Notable Events and Milestones
On September 11, 2001, Beug boarded American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston to Los Angeles. She was returning home after accompanying her twin daughters, Lauren and Lindsey, to the Rhode Island School of Design for their college enrollment. Her mother, Mary Alice Wahlstrom, was also on the flight. The aircraft crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. At the time of her death, Beug was working on a children’s book about Noah’s Ark told from the perspective of Noah’s wife; the manuscript was never completed or released.
Awards and Honors
Beug won an MTV Video Music Award for her production work on the Van Halen music video “Right Now.” She is memorialized at the National September 11 Memorial at the North Pool, Panel N-1.
