Oil Prices Surge Over 2%: Brent Crude Exceeds $107 Amid New Saudi Strikes and Strait of Hormuz Tensions

Oil prices surged over 2% on Monday, driven by renewed supply concerns following Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia and Iranian strikes on vessels in the Gulf. Brent crude futures climbed by $2.90, or 2.77%, reaching $107.51 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose $2.27, or 2.27%, to $102.32 a barrel. The price increase followed a more than 3% rise at market open, with Brent initially hitting $108.23 and WTI reaching $103.20.

Houthi Attacks and Regional Tensions

Saudi state media reported damage to homes and a mosque in the southern Jazan province due to a Houthi attack. The Iran-aligned Houthis claimed responsibility for targeting a Saudi military base in a neighboring province. In a separate incident, a vessel in the Strait of Hormuz was struck by a projectile, resulting in a fire and crew evacuation, according to the British maritime security agency UKMTO. Iran reported one fatality and four injuries from an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel off its coast.

The surge in oil prices follows the shutdown of Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, which occurred after a drone attack from Iraq. This pipeline is crucial for rerouting shipments and avoiding the Strait of Hormuz, and its closure threatens up to 4% of global oil supply. The Houthis have also strengthened their position near the strategic island of Perim, close to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another vital oil transit route.

Market Response and Strategic Implications

Oil prices have increased approximately 8% over the past week, surpassing $100 a barrel for the first time since July. The escalation of tensions in the Middle East has heightened concerns regarding global oil supplies. The Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point in this confrontation, with nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passing through it before the onset of conflict.

Oman has postponed a scheduled meeting with Iran and other regional countries intended to discuss shipping management through the Strait of Hormuz. Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi stated that the postponement was made “in the interests of consensus.” An Iranian foreign ministry official indicated that the delay was requested by several regional countries. The meeting was set to address collaborative efforts between Iran and Oman regarding shipping through this critical waterway.
