Government Boosts Support for Senior Citizens Across India
The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is making significant strides to enhance the welfare and quality of life for senior citizens. With a focus on institutional care, healthcare support, and access to essential services, these initiatives aim to ensure that elderly individuals can live with dignity and independence.
According to Shri Sudhansh Pant, the Secretary of the Ministry, over 288,000 senior citizens have benefited from various programs, including shelters, nutritious meals, healthcare services, physiotherapy, and recreational activities. These initiatives address their daily needs while promoting physical health and overall well-being.
New Homes and Increased Accessibility
In an effort to further expand institutional support, the government has sanctioned 142 new Senior Citizen Homes across multiple regions. This expansion is expected to bolster access to essential care and support for elderly individuals, making a difference in their lives.
Assistive Devices and Community Support
To promote independent living, the Ministry has organized 228 camps that served over 491,000 beneficiaries. During these camps, approximately 23.93 lakh free assistive living devices were distributed. These included vital items such as wheelchairs, hearing aids, walking sticks, and spectacles targeted at senior citizens from Below Poverty Line (BPL) categories and low-income groups. By providing these tools, the Ministry is enhancing mobility and communication for the elderly, facilitating their participation in daily activities.
Infrastructure for Information Access
Another significant step taken by the Ministry is the launch of a Senior Citizen’s Welfare Portal by the Hon’ble President of India. This platform serves as a comprehensive resource for information related to senior welfare, streamlining access to essential support in one convenient location.
Shri Pant emphasized that these comprehensive measures reinforce the Ministry’s commitment to elevating the living standards of senior citizens. By improving access to care and welfare infrastructure, the government is ensuring that older adults can lead dignified, independent lives amidst a rapidly changing society.
