India Boosts Support for Sanitation Workers with New Initiatives
The Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment is making significant strides to enhance the welfare and dignity of sanitation workers across India. New initiatives aim to provide essential support, including worker profiling, personal protective equipment (PPE), health insurance, financial assistance, and improvements to safety infrastructure.
During a recent press briefing, Secretary of the Ministry, Shri Sudhansh Pant, announced that a total of 90,942 sewer and septic tank workers have been profiled, with 89,248 of these profiles validated. In a concerted effort to ensure safety, the Ministry has provided PPE kits to 87,037 workers, while approximately 76,247 individuals are now covered under various health insurance schemes designed to foster safer working conditions and facilitate access to healthcare.
Financial Assistance and Equipment Support
To improve operational efficiency, the Ministry has released an upfront capital subsidy of Rs 34.17 crore to 983 sanitation workers, enabling the procurement of 364 sanitation vehicles. This financial aid not only supports mechanized sanitation operations but also creates vital livelihood opportunities for the workforce.
Further enhancing safety measures, 753 safety devices have been dispatched to Emergency Response Sanitation Units (ERSUs) located in major municipal corporations and districts. These devices are crucial for ensuring the safety of workers engaged in challenging sanitation tasks.
Educational Workshops and Expanded Coverage
Shri Pant also highlighted the Ministry’s proactive approach in providing education about hazardous cleaning practices. A total of 1,562 workshops focusing on the prevention of hazardous cleaning of sewers and septic tanks have been conducted nationwide. This effort underscores the commitment to not just financial support but also worker safety and education.
The coverage of the program has been notably broadened as of June 2024 to include waste pickers involved in solid waste management across urban and rural areas. This expansion reflects the Ministry’s dedication to extending welfare and safety support to a broader range of workers.
As part of these initiatives, the profiling of waste pickers is underway, with 3,78,547 workers profiled, out of which 2,52,163 have validated their profiles through e-KYC. Additionally, 1,31,864 waste pickers have received PPE kits, and data for 1,24,835 workers has been processed for the generation of Ayushman Cards, enhancing their access to healthcare services.
