IRCTC Achieves Record 20.06 Lakh Ticket Bookings in a Single Day Amid Festive Demand Surge
The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has achieved a new milestone in online ticket bookings, with 89% of total train tickets now booked online. This surge in digital bookings coincided with the recent reduction of the advance reservation window from 120 days to 60 days, which began this week in anticipation of Diwali 2026 on November 8.
Record Ticket Bookings
On September 7, 2026, IRCTC’s website recorded its highest single-day ticket bookings, with 2,006,353 tickets sold. The following day, the platform maintained its momentum, processing 1,950,699 bookings. This performance showcases the robustness of the Next Generation e-Ticketing (NGeT) system, which has been upgraded to handle high volumes of transactions. Notably, only 8.43% to 14.14% of daily bookings occur during the first hour of operation, with the majority completed later in the day.
System Upgrades and Modernization
To support the increased demand, Indian Railways is modernizing its ticket booking system. A new user interface (UI) beta version was rolled out on July 15, 2026, enhancing the user experience with a contemporary design. The updated interface allows users to view availability across different travel classes on a single screen, simplifying the booking process.
IRCTC has also implemented significant technical improvements. The NGeT system’s capacity has doubled due to hardware upgrades and software optimizations. Additionally, partnerships with technology providers have introduced Anti-BOT measures, reducing malicious traffic by 55% to 65%. The Content Delivery Network (CDN) is now serving static content, alleviating pressure on the NGeT system and improving user experience.
Measures Against Misuse
To ensure fair access during peak booking times, authorized ticketing agents are restricted from booking during the first 10 minutes of the advance reservation period. Since October 12, 2025, only Aadhaar-authenticated users can book tickets during this window. The NGeT system has successfully managed between 13.3 million and 17.4 million logins on ARP opening days, processing up to 2 million bookings.
IRCTC has also taken steps to combat misuse of its ticketing system. Over 30.4 million user IDs have been deactivated, and 63.3 million IDs are under revalidation. Additionally, 16,041 suspicious email domains have been blocked, and 592 complaints related to suspicious PNRs have been filed with the Cyber Crime Portal.
