China Highlights ‘Mutually Beneficial, Win-Win’ Trade Relations with India

China has characterized its economic and trade relations with India as “mutually beneficial and win-win,” urging New Delhi to ensure a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese firms. The comments came from Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun during a press briefing, where he addressed concerns regarding an investigation into Xiaomi’s operations in India.

Guo stated that he was not familiar with the specifics of the situation but expressed hope that India would maintain a non-discriminatory environment for all foreign companies. His remarks followed reports that India’s Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO) has sought approval for a deeper probe into Xiaomi, focusing on fund transfers and compliance with Indian investment laws. Xiaomi has responded, asserting that it has not received any communication from the SFIO and that it adheres to Indian regulations.

Diplomatic Engagements

India’s Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, has advocated for enhanced cooperation between the two nations in trade, economy, climate action, and the digital sector. In an opinion piece for the Global Times, he emphasized that a stable and amicable relationship between India and China would benefit their combined population of approximately 2.8 billion and contribute to global stability.

Guo refrained from commenting on whether Chinese President Xi Jinping would attend the upcoming BRICS Summit in India. Xi is expected to participate in the summit on September 12 and 13, marking his first visit to India in seven years. His attendance comes as both countries aim to stabilize relations following previous tensions over border disputes. Reports indicate that Xi will be accompanied by a significantly larger delegation than in 2019, raising expectations for potential discussions between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the summit.
