Indian Government Greenlights Major Railway Projects Worth Rs. 10,783 Crore
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved three significant railway projects aimed at enhancing India’s railway infrastructure. These initiatives, with a combined budget of Rs. 10,783 crore, are set to improve connectivity and operational efficiency across multiple states.
The approved projects include the Kharagpur–Jharsuguda (Bagdehi) fourth line, the Katni–Pendra Road fourth line, and the Bilaspur (Uslapur)–Pendra Road third line. By expanding the network’s capacity, these developments are expected to alleviate congestion and streamline railway operations significantly.
Vision for a Self-Reliant India
These projects align with Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a New India, promoting self-reliance through comprehensive regional development. Enhanced railway capacity is also anticipated to create more job opportunities for residents in the vicinity. This initiative supports the government’s commitment to improve livelihoods through better infrastructure.
Economic and Environmental Benefits
The proposed enhancements are designed according to the PM-Gati Shakti National Master Plan, which emphasizes integrated planning to enrich multi-modal connectivity and logistical efficiency. This strategic approach will facilitate smoother movement for people, goods, and services across the railway network.
Covering 14 districts in West Bengal, Jharkhand, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, these railway enhancements will extend the Indian Railways’ current network by approximately 656 kilometers. This extension will directly benefit around 4,790 villages, home to nearly 5.6 million residents.
Boosting Tourism and Freight Traffic
The initiatives will bolster access to several notable tourist attractions, including the Taratarini Temple, Shri Khetra Jagannath Temple, and Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, among others. Furthermore, the projects are vital for transporting essential commodities such as coal, cement, and steel, with the anticipated capacity increase projecting an additional freight traffic of 27 million tonnes per annum.
Environmental Impact
The Indian Railways, known for being an environmentally friendly mode of transport, aims to support climate goals while reducing overall logistics costs. The enhancements are expected to lessen oil imports by approximately 12 crore liters yearly and decrease CO2 emissions by around 62 crore kilograms, which is comparable to planting 2.48 crore trees.
