India to Shine at WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 with Expanded Participation
India is gearing up for a significant leap in global skills representation as it prepares to participate in the 48th WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai, China, scheduled for September 22 to 27, 2026. For the first time, India will compete in eleven new skill categories, highlighting the nation’s commitment to expanding its skills landscape.
Team Skill India will showcase talent in 63 out of 64 skills, with nearly 70 competitors, marking one of the largest and most diverse representations India has seen at WorldSkills. The eleven new skills include Dental Prosthetics, Digital Interactive Media Design, Intelligent Security Technology, Landscape Gardening, Optoelectronic Technology, Retail Sales, Unmanned Aerial Systems, Industrial Mechanics, Software Testing, Heavy Vehicle Technology, and Aircraft Maintenance.
This expansion reflects the evolution and maturity of India’s skilling ecosystem, which is transitioning from a focus on traditional trades to embracing advanced technologies and specialized services. The initiative is supported by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), ensuring rigorous preparation through collaboration with industry partners, training institutions, and experts in various fields.
Ms. Debashree Mukherjee, Secretary of MSDE, stated, “India’s participation in these new skills reflects the evolution of our skilling ecosystem towards future-facing and globally relevant capabilities. Through strong partnerships and rigorous preparation, we are enabling our youth to compete with confidence and benchmark themselves against global standards.”
These new categories are critical to addressing the emerging demands of the workforce, covering areas such as healthcare technologies, digital design, intelligent systems, and advanced manufacturing. They highlight India’s dedication to aligning skills development with global industry requirements and creating pathways for youth in internationally recognized skill domains.
The preparation for these new categories involves a cohesive network of specialized training institutions and industry partners. Notable contributors include the Government Tool Room and Training Centre (GTTC) in Karnataka, NAMTECH in Gandhinagar, Bennett University, and leading companies like Croma, Titan Company Ltd – Tanishq, and Reliance Trends.
India’s progress in global skill competitions has been commendable, climbing from a rank of 29th at WorldSkills in 2015 to 13th just nine years later. The nation further solidified its international stature by achieving 8th rank in Asia at WorldSkills Asia 2025 and winning five medals at the Taipei Capital Cup in 2026.
Under the Skill India Mission, the country is establishing a robust ecosystem for preparation, anchored by industry partnerships and structured training. The expanded participation in WorldSkills Shanghai 2026 is another significant chapter in India’s journey to becoming a global hub for skilled talent.
Each of the new competition categories plays a pivotal role in shaping future workforce skills:
- Intelligent Security Technology: Focuses on the installation and maintenance of intelligent systems for protecting assets.
- Landscape Gardening: Combines design with environmental understanding to create functional outdoor spaces.
- Optoelectronic Technology: Merges light and electricity science, impacting manufacturing and healthcare.
- Digital Interactive Media Design: Involves creating immersive digital experiences through innovative media.
- Retail Sales: Emphasizes customer engagement and experience in modern business practices.
- Heavy Vehicle Technology: Develops advanced repair and maintenance skills for the mobility sector.
- Unmanned Aerial Systems: Showcases the expanding applications of drone technologies across various industries.
- Dental Prosthetics: Focuses on designing dental devices that enhance oral health and quality of life.
- Industrial Mechanics: Centers on maintaining complex industrial machinery and production systems.
- Software Testing: Ensures software quality and reliability through precise testing methodologies.
- Aircraft Maintenance: Involves rigorous inspection and servicing of aircraft systems to ensure safety and compliance.
