India Enhances Efforts to Control Lumpy Skin Disease in Cattle
The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD), Government of India, has ramped up its initiatives to combat Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), a viral ailment affecting cattle and buffaloes. The department is actively collaborating with various States and Union Territories (UTs) to evaluate the disease’s status and implement crucial vaccination and containment strategies efficiently.
Proactive Measures for Disease Control
In a recent review meeting, the DAHD underscored the importance of timely vaccination, especially targeting heifers and young cattle. Essential control measures include ring vaccination, movement restrictions, isolation of infected animals, and advancements in vector control, disinfecting practices, and the management of strays. Additionally, all States were urged to report disease occurrences promptly via official channels.
Expert Team Deployed to Assess Ground Situation
A dedicated Central Expert Team was dispatched to Uttar Pradesh in August 2026 to take stock of the situation, observe current measures, and provide technical assistance for better preparedness and response. Continuous monitoring of LSD’s impact across States and UTs has been instituted, with review meetings organized on August 27 and September 7, 2026, to bolster preparedness.
Understanding Lumpy Skin Disease
First identified in India in September 2019, LSD is caused by the Capripox virus and primarily spreads through insect vectors. Characterized by fever and skin nodules, it typically presents low mortality rates. Since July 2026, sporadic cases have been reported, predominantly in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and a few other states—mostly among young animals. Thankfully, the severity of cases remains low, with most recovering within a week.
Strengthening Diagnostic and Treatment Efforts
The DAHD has been proactive in enhancing the technical support provided to States and UTs, focusing on vaccination protocols, treatment regimens, biosecurity measures, and disease control strategies. Significant investments have been made to bolster diagnostic capabilities across the nation, leveraging resources from ICAR-NIHSAD, Bhopal, and various Regional Disease Diagnostic Laboratories.
Financial Support and Vaccination Statistics
To further fortify the national framework in tackling LSD, the department is extending financial aid to States and UTs for vaccination efforts, vocational training, awareness campaigns, and upgrading veterinary infrastructures. As of now, an impressive total of over 36.18 crore cattle have been vaccinated against LSD, with vaccination campaigns ongoing in affected areas and preventive measures in place in non-affected regions.
Current Status of Lumpy Skin Disease
As it stands, the situation regarding LSD is under control, with a notable drop in both severity and mortality rates. Currently, there are 3,461 active cases, primarily among young, unvaccinated animals and those suffering from other health issues. The DAHD remains vigilant, continuously monitoring the disease’s progress and offering necessary technical assistance, vaccination support, and laboratory resources to ensure effective control and management.
