ULLAS Program Celebrates International Literacy Day with Empowerment Themes
On the occasion of International Literacy Day 2026 celebrated in New Delhi, Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Shri Jayant Chaudhary, emphasized the importance of literacy as a vital tool for personal empowerment and societal growth. He observed that programs like ULLAS are vital in instilling confidence, dignity, and opportunities for individuals to engage meaningfully within their communities.
Addressing attendees at the national-level celebration, Shri Chaudhary urged that literacy should encompass more than merely the ability to read and write. He argued that modern literacy must include comprehension, practical application of knowledge, as well as financial and digital literacy. He asserted that education should serve as a catalyst for sustainable development and pragmatic citizenship, ultimately contributing to economic prosperity.
Fostering Curiosity and Innovation
Shri Chaudhary called on students and educators to nurture curiosity, critical thinking, and creativity. He highlighted the significance of equipping the youth with not only knowledge but also the confidence to apply it effectively in our rapidly evolving world. He encouraged everyone to reimagine education as a means to challenge conventional norms and contribute to the vision of a progressive India.
State Achievements and Commitments
Chief Minister of Tripura, Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha, remarked on the state’s achievement of a 95.6% literacy rate, which surpasses the Government of India’s requirement for declaring full literacy. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to reduce dropout rates significantly in the coming years.
Joining the occasion were several education ministers from various states, including Shri Rohit Thakur from Himachal Pradesh, Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat from Uttarakhand, Dr. Vanlalthlana from Mizoram, and Shri Raju Basnet from Sikkim. Secretary of the Department of School Education & Literacy, Shri T. K. Anil Kumar, and other senior officials, contributed to the event’s success.
A National Platform for Literacy Initiatives
The event was part of a two-day celebration under the theme “Literacy for people, the planet and prosperity.” As part of this celebration, an ULLAS Mela is scheduled for tomorrow at the National Bal Bhawan, featuring participants from 29 states and union territories. This platform will enable neo-literates, volunteer teachers, and stakeholders to share their experiences, innovations, and best practices.
The Ministry of Education is also hosting Literacy Fortnight from September 1 to 14, 2026, with an array of activities aimed at enhancing community engagement. This includes workshops, seminars, local programs, rallies, and digital outreach initiatives. These efforts are designed to foster a collective responsibility for literacy and aim to realize the vision of “Jan Jan Saakshar,” ensuring every individual has access to foundational literacy and continuous learning opportunities.
