Sahara Refunds Resume: Rs 9,267 Crore Returned to Depositors
In a significant move to restore public trust in the cooperative sector, the Ministry of Cooperation has resumed the refund process for legitimate depositors of Sahara Group cooperative societies. This initiative is guided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Sahakar se Samriddhi,’ and is under the vigilant leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Following a Supreme Court order on March 29, 2023, the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS) has been instrumental in facilitating refunds through a secure and transparent online platform.
To date, a remarkable total of Rs 9,267 crore has been refunded to over 4.1 million depositors, directly deposited into their Aadhaar-linked bank accounts. However, approximately 2 million applications remain pending and are now actively being processed through the recently restored CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal.
Administrative Challenges Overcome
The Sahara cooperative societies faced operational disruptions beginning in November 2025, when their premises were sealed due to unrelated legal issues. This led to a series of administrative and financial challenges, including outstanding dues for essential services and operational licenses, ultimately hindering the refund process for depositors.
The Ministry of Cooperation has played a crucial role in addressing these hurdles. Through focused efforts and collaboration with key stakeholders, including officials from the Government of Uttar Pradesh, the ministry has effectively addressed the systemic issues affecting the refund mechanism, leading to the restoration of both the portal and the associated verification processes.
Streamlined Refund Process
The refund process operates via the CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal, which guarantees a digital, paperless, and transparent approach to claims submission. Launched on July 18, 2023, the portal allows depositors to submit refund applications without the hassle of physical paperwork, ensuring accessibility and maintaining an accurate digital record.
Claims are rigorously processed through Aadhaar e-KYC, validating depositor identities and matching their membership details against data provided by the respective societies. According to the approved Standard Operating Procedures, supporting documents like deposit certificates are thoroughly verified. Once confirmed, eligible refunds are efficiently credited to the bank accounts linked to the depositors’ Aadhaar numbers.
Ongoing Improvements and User Guidance
The Ministry of Cooperation, alongside the CRCS, continues to enhance the necessary IT infrastructure and renew essential systems to overcome earlier challenges. This reflects their commitment to supporting genuine depositors while ensuring that all claim processing is carried out smoothly and efficiently.
Depositors are encouraged to exclusively use the official CRCS-Sahara Refund Portal at https://mocrefund.crcs.gov.in for new claims and https://mocresubmit.crcs.gov.in for resubmissions. Following the correct procedures and document requirements will ensure timely processing and safeguard against unauthorized channels.
