Digital India Engages with Kathmandu University on Language AI
The Digital India BHASHINI Division (DIBD), part of the Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, recently hosted an interactive session at Kathmandu University. This event, conducted in collaboration with the University’s Center for Digital Public Infrastructure and Artificial Intelligence (DPI-AI) team, aimed to explore opportunities for joint efforts in Language AI, with a focus on enhancing language technologies for Nepal.
Fostering Linguistic Diversity in AI
During the discussions, participants highlighted the potential for strengthening existing language models as well as developing new ones for underrepresented languages. Special focus was given to Nepali, Newari, Tamang, and Gurung languages, alongside traditional scripts like Prachalit Lipi and Ranjana Lipi. The conversation recognized the need to incorporate Nepal’s rich linguistic diversity into the digital and AI landscapes.
Addressing Language Data Challenges
A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to the challenges surrounding language data. The dialogue pointed out that creating high-quality, representative datasets necessitates ongoing collection and curation across various languages, speakers, and scripts. Additionally, the participants discussed ways to enhance translation capabilities and the computational resources necessary to train, refine, and scale these language models.
Real-World Applications of Language AI
The discussions extended beyond model development, looking at practical applications, particularly voice-first solutions. The goal was to connect language data, models, and technology with applications that provide meaningful digital experiences in local languages. This approach aims to bridge the gap between technological advancement and local language accessibility.
