Ministry of Jal Shakti Hosts First Water Departmental Summit
In a momentous initiative aimed at achieving the vision of a Water Secure India and Viksit Bharat 2047, the Ministry of Jal Shakti will convene the inaugural Departmental Summit on September 1-2, 2026, at Sushma Swaraj Bhawan, New Delhi. This event, inspired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, establishes an innovative platform to reinforce cooperative federalism, enhance collective ownership of national objectives, and promote collaboration between the Centre and States.
The Departmental Summit embodies the spirit of ‘Team India’ by uniting political leaders and senior officials from both the Union and State Governments. Attendees will engage in discussions about critical sectoral priorities, share valuable experiences, tackle implementation hurdles, and agree upon actionable, time-bound strategies for improved governance and service delivery. As the first Summit in a series, it signifies a transformative move toward institutionalizing cooperation between the Centre and State in pursuit of national development.
Thematic Focus Areas
This two-day Summit will spotlight four foundational themes: the expedient execution of water infrastructure projects; Jal Sanchay Jan Bhagidari-Catch the Rain; the sustainability of drinking water sources; and managing rural drinking water supply schemes under Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0. Each theme will facilitate discussions on project implementations, inter-agency collaboration, water conservation efforts, rainwater harvesting, groundwater replenishment, digital monitoring techniques, asset management, and the enhancement of community-led water governance.
Expected Outcomes
The Summit aims to yield tangible and time-specific results, accelerating the completion of ongoing projects and bolstering public involvement in water conservation. Strengthening the sustainability of drinking water sources is also a priority, along with improving accountability for reliable rural drinking water services. States participating in the Summit will exchange their experiences and best practices while reaching a consensus on the outcomes, reflecting the values of cooperative federalism and shared responsibility.
