Varsha Aglawe Becomes First Female Head of Geological Survey of India
Smt. Varsha Ashok Aglawe has made history by becoming the first woman to lead the Geological Survey of India (GSI) as its 54th Director General. Her appointment marks a significant milestone for the organization, which has a 176-year legacy. Aglawe takes over the reins from Shri Asit Saha, who served from July 27, 2024, to July 31, 2026.
With over three decades of experience in the field of geoscience, Aglawe brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role. She joined GSI in 1992 after a career at the Indian Bureau of Mines. Throughout her tenure, she has held crucial scientific and administrative positions across GSI’s Central, Northern, and Eastern Regions, as well as at the Central Headquarters. Before this historic appointment, she was the Additional Director General and Head of Department for the Eastern Region in Kolkata.
Expertise and Contributions
Aglawe specializes in palaeontology and palynology, with notable contributions to the understanding of Late Cretaceous–Palaeocene sediments, the K-T boundary, and the Satpura-Gondwana basins. Her work includes the discovery of a new dinosaur nesting site in Central India, found in the Salbardi–Ghorpend area. Additionally, she has collaborated with the University of Michigan Museum of Paleontology in the United States on several international research projects and represented GSI at the PDAC 2023 in Toronto, Canada.
Vision for GSI’s Future
Upon taking office, Aglawe expressed her vision for GSI’s future, emphasizing the organization’s dedication to aligning its initiatives with the priorities of the Indian government. She highlighted the importance of critical mineral exploration and mineral security. Aglawe called for an accelerated approach to exploring deep-seated and concealed mineral deposits using advanced geophysical techniques. She also pointed to the necessity of enhancing laboratory facilities and streamlining exploration programs.
In her inaugural remarks, Aglawe stressed the need to boost offshore mineral exploration, foster state-of-the-art geoscientific research, and support public-good initiatives like studies on natural hazards and glaciology. Furthermore, she aimed to enhance scientific publications and create more learning opportunities for aspiring geoscientists.
