BRICS Science Academies Forum Explores AI for Sustainable Development
The first day of the BRICS Science Academies Forum Meeting 2026 kicked off today at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad, focusing on the theme “Harnessing Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development and Strengthening Global South Cooperation”. This gathering brings together representatives from BRICS member states, including Brazil, China, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Russia, and South Africa, along with partner nations such as Nigeria, Vietnam, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Malaysia, to discuss innovative approaches to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into sustainable development initiatives.
During the opening session, Prof. Shekhar Mande, President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), delivered a keynote address emphasizing AI’s potential to tackle pressing global challenges, particularly those facing the Global South. He highlighted the necessity for AI systems to be ethical, transparent, and accessible across all layers of society. Following this, Dr. Debashis Mitra, INSA’s Vice President for International Affairs, addressed the need for enhanced multilateral scientific collaboration, and Prof. B. S. Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad, talked about various AI initiatives at the institute.
Key Focus Areas for AI Collaboration
The conference outlined five primary areas where AI can be instrumental:
- Advanced Materials and Manufacturing: Focus on speeding up material discovery and optimizing manufacturing processes.
- Healthcare: Enhancing decision-making capabilities, facilitating large-scale health screenings, and improving health research.
- Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability: Leveraging AI to enhance forecasting and risk management strategies.
- Agriculture and Food Security: Utilizing AI for agricultural advisories and improving seed research.
- Disaster Prediction and Management: Developing better forecasting methods and improving resource management during crises.
The thematic discussions kicked off with insights from Prof. Ambuj Sagar of IIT Delhi, who set the stage for an active exchange of ideas among academies. Each national academy provided valuable insights, with the Brazilian Academy stressing the inclusion of AI in climate resilience and food security, while the Chinese Academy advocated for data sharing practices that align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Prof. U. B. Desai, INSA’s Vice President of Fellowship Affairs, summarized the key points, urging for greater cooperation and knowledge sharing between the nations involved. The day featured a Plenary Lecture by Prof. Anurag Agrawal, discussing the critical considerations of AI in healthcare.
Concluding Day and Joint Statement Insights
The second day commenced with a plenary lecture from Prof. Indranil Manna, who elaborated on AI’s potential in the field of materials science. A keynote by Dr. Ashish Lele focused on integrating AI and green hydrogen as part of India’s energy transition initiatives.
A pivotal moment took place during the Open Discussion on the Joint Statement, chaired by Prof. Shekhar C. Mande. Representatives from member nations engaged in discussions to finalize a consensus statement, reflecting their shared vision for future AI developments in science and technology. This will be presented at the upcoming BRICS Science, Technology, and Innovation Ministerial Meeting in August 2026.
Shri Shambhulingappa Hakki, Joint Secretary (MER & G20) and BRICS Sous Sherpa, closed the proceedings by emphasizing the crucial role of science in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. The event concluded with a gratitude session led by Dr. Brajesh Pandey, marking a successful first edition of the forum.
