India’s Fertiliser Strategy: 32 Lakh Tonnes Imported in Q1 and Enhanced Supply Chain via International Agreements
India imported over 32 lakh tonnes of essential fertilizers in the first quarter of the current financial year, according to government data presented in Parliament. The imports included 25.08 lakh tonnes of urea and 7.11 lakh tonnes of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP), supplementing domestic production to meet agricultural demand. During the same period, domestic fertilizer production reached 115.72 lakh tonnes, with urea contributing 71.55 lakh tonnes and DAP accounting for 9.84 lakh tonnes.
Comparison with Previous Years
In the financial year 2025-2026, India produced a total of 517.74 lakh tonnes of fertilizers. During that year, the country imported 103.50 lakh tonnes of urea and 61.94 lakh tonnes of DAP. The current figures indicate a significant reliance on imports to meet the growing demand for fertilizers.
Government Looks to Diversify Overseas Supplies
Chemicals and Fertilizers Minister J P Nadda emphasized the government’s strategy to diversify fertilizer import sources amid global supply chain disruptions. He stated that efforts are ongoing to broaden the import base to mitigate risks associated with these disruptions. The government is facilitating long-term commercial arrangements between Indian fertilizer companies and international suppliers to enhance supply security.
Nadda noted that the Department of Fertilizers is collaborating with Indian missions abroad to identify alternative supply sources, reducing dependence on any single country, including China. He mentioned that while China has reportedly restricted exports of specialty fertilizers to India, Indian companies are sourcing water-soluble fertilizers from alternative suppliers in Belgium, Egypt, Germany, Morocco, and the USA to compensate for the shortfall.
Long-term Agreements Abroad
India has secured long-term agreements with Saudi Arabian companies for the annual supply of approximately 31 lakh tonnes of DAP. Additionally, Indian fertilizer companies have entered into agreements with Russian suppliers for the import of about 26.50 lakh tonnes of DAP/NPK fertilizers this year. Agreements have also been finalized for the import of 4.80 lakh tonnes of muriate of potash (MOP) from Russia, Germany, and Turkmenistan.
