Government Boosts Public Healthcare with National Health Mission Initiatives
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is intensifying its efforts to enhance public healthcare across India by providing both technical and financial support to States and Union Territories. This initiative, largely aimed at disease prevention and strengthened healthcare services, is structured around the proposals received under the National Health Mission (NHM).
Approval for these proposals is granted by the Government of India in the form of Record of Proceedings (RoPs), which are aligned with established norms and available resources. A wide array of initiatives is presently underway under the NHM, including the establishment of Ayushman Arogya Mandirs (AAMs), the Free Drugs Service Initiative, and National Ambulance Services, aimed at delivering comprehensive healthcare services to all citizens.
Comprehensive Healthcare Initiatives
Among the notable programs launched under the NHM are mobile medical units, 24×7 services including first referral facilities, and specialized initiatives such as the Prime Minister’s National Dialysis Programme. Special attention is also given to Reproductive and Child Health, the Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) strategy, the TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, and enhancing the Universal Immunization Programme.
The National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD) plays a crucial role in this healthcare framework. It aims to strengthen infrastructure and develop human resources while promoting awareness and early diagnosis of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including cervical cancer. To date, a network of 770 District NCD Clinics and over 6,000 Community Health Centre NCD Clinics has been established to facilitate effective disease management.
Expanding Access to Healthcare
The Government is bolstering primary healthcare through 1.86 lakh AAMs, enhancing Sub Health Centres (SHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs). These facilities are positioned to deliver a broad spectrum of services, from preventive health measures to treatment for communicable and non-communicable diseases.
Furthermore, the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) is a flagship program providing health coverage of up to Rs. 5 lakhs per family per year. This ambitious initiative aims to support approximately 55 Crore beneficiaries or 12.37 Crore families, particularly those belonging to the economically vulnerable segment of India’s population. Recently, the scheme was expanded to include 6 crore senior citizens aged 70 and above, enhancing accessibility to essential health services.
Digital Health and Infrastructure Developments
The Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) aims to revolutionize healthcare access by creating a seamless online platform for health data interoperability and maintaining electronic health records for every citizen. Additionally, teleconsultation services at AAMs further accommodate patients’ needs by enabling specialist access close to home.
Launched with an investment of Rs. 64,180 crores, the PM-Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission (PM-ABHIM) seeks to strengthen healthcare systems across the nation. This initiative promises to significantly improve healthcare access and quality for millions of citizens.
Focus on Maternal and Child Health
The Government’s commitment to maternal and child health is evident through various programs aimed at improving outcomes for mothers and newborns. Initiatives such as the Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) work to promote safe institutional deliveries, ensure pregnant women receive quality antenatal care, and provide essential postnatal support.
As the efforts of the government continue to evolve, a comprehensive approach under the NHM is expected to further enhance health outcomes nationwide, underlining the pivotal role of integrated healthcare services in India’s public health strategy.
