University of Kashmir Triumphs at National Youth Parliament Competition

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs celebrated the achievements of young leaders today at the Prize Distribution Function for the 17th National Youth Parliament Competition, 2024-25. Held in the prestigious GMC Balayogi Auditorium within the Parliament House Complex, New Delhi, the event highlighted the remarkable talents of students from various universities and colleges across the nation.

Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Law and Justice and Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, took the stage to present the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Running Parliamentary Shield and Trophy, awarded to the University of Kashmir, Srinagar, which secured first place at the national level. Additionally, seven other universities and colleges received Group Level Winner Trophies for their outstanding performances throughout the competition.

Celebrating Excellence in Youth Engagement

Among the Group Level Winners were esteemed institutions including DAV College in Jalandhar, Jadavpur University in Kolkata, and Shivaji University in Kolhapur. The participating universities highlighted the competitive spirit and intellectual prowess of the youth.

The University of Kashmir not only emerged victorious but also showcased their winning Youth Parliament Sitting as part of the celebration, reaffirming their exceptional abilities in parliamentary procedures. Secretary of the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Nikunja Bihari Dhal, expressed his enthusiasm for the active participation of 51 universities and colleges in this year’s competition and emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to expanding student involvement in future iterations.

Fostering Democratic Values

During his address, Prof. Pervez Ahmed, Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Kashmir, praised the opportunity provided by the Youth Parliament Program to strengthen democratic values among the youth. He acknowledged the importance of such platforms in helping students build confidence, leadership skills, and showcase their talents. His remarks echoed a broader sentiment of gratitude towards the Ministry for supporting educational initiatives.

Minister Meghwal congratulated the participants, stating they represent the future of the nation. He inspired them with the words of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, encouraging them to dream big and pursue their aspirations with tenacity. The Minister expressed optimism that these young leaders would significantly contribute to nation-building efforts in the future.

A Commitment to Environmental Responsibility

In a notable addition to the event, the Minister also led the attendees in taking the LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) Pledge, underlining the importance of environmental sustainability.

The Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs has successfully conducted Youth Parliament Competitions for 29 years, with the latest competition showcasing the talents of 51 participating institutions. The program aims to instill values of self-discipline, tolerance, and democratic engagement among students while familiarizing them with parliamentary processes, discussion techniques, and effective communication skills.

Dr. Satya Prakash, Additional Secretary of the Ministry, concluded the event with a Vote of Thanks, appreciating everyone involved in the successful organization of the day’s activities.
