General Election Schedule Announced with ‘Dry Day’ Guidelines

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially revealed the schedule for the upcoming General Election to the Legislative Assemblies of Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, along with bye-elections in six additional states. Voters in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal will head to the polls for Phase-I on April 23, 2026, with Phase-II in West Bengal following on April 29, 2026. The counting of votes across all polling states and union territories is set for May 4, 2026.

‘Dry Day’ Declaration

In accordance with Section 135C of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, the ECI has announced that no alcoholic beverages or intoxicating substances will be allowed for sale or distribution within polling areas during the 48 hours leading up to the closing of polls. This declaration, known as a ‘Dry Day,’ will also apply on the day of the vote counting, reinforcing the importance of maintaining decorum during the election period.

Restrictions on Alcohol Sales

During these specified days, liquor shops, hotels, restaurants, clubs, and any establishments that serve or sell alcoholic beverages will be prohibited from doing so. This rule extends to non-proprietary clubs, star hotels, and restaurants operating under various liquor licenses. All such establishments must adhere to these regulations to ensure compliance and promote a fair electoral process.

Enforcement of Storage Regulations

Additionally, the ECI emphasizes that individuals’ storage of liquor will be strictly regulated during this timeframe. Authorities will enforce restrictions outlined in existing excise laws concerning the storage of alcohol on unlicensed premises. This initiative aims to prevent any potential influences that liquor sales could have on the electoral outcome.

With these measures, the ECI strives to uphold the integrity of the electoral process, ensuring that voters can exercise their rights in a peaceful and sober environment. Citizens are encouraged to participate actively in these elections, as their votes play a crucial role in shaping the future of their respective states.
