Experts Discuss Next-Gen D2D Satellite Technology at DoT Webinar

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hosted a pivotal technical webinar entitled “The D2D Frontier: Technology, Global Precedence and Indian Context” at the Telecommunication Engineering Centre (TEC) in New Delhi today. This event brought together international experts, industry stakeholders, and policymakers to explore the emerging landscape of Direct-to-Device (D2D) satellite communication technologies.

Sh. Rudra Narayan Palai, Member (Technology) at the DoT, inaugurated the event, emphasizing the crucial role of advanced connectivity solutions in fulfilling the Government’s ambition of achieving “Connectivity for All.” His remarks highlighted the importance of expanding digital access to all corners of the country, particularly focusing on rural and underserved areas.

Key Participation and Insights

The webinar saw active participation from representatives of IN-SPACe and officials from the Wireless Planning & Coordination (WPC) Wing, alongside TEC and DoT staff. Technical sessions featured in-depth discussions led by experts from AST Space Mobile, recognized as a global leader in D2D satellite communications, and Vodafone Idea Limited. These sessions provided valuable insights into international developments and the latest technological advancements in D2D and Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) ecosystems.

Addressing the Indian Context

Discussions also delved into the specific implications of D2D technology in India. Experts elaborated on the potential advantages and operational aspects crucial for implementing D2D technologies nationwide. The talks underscored how this innovative technology may significantly bridge connectivity gaps, particularly in areas with challenging geographical conditions. Furthermore, enhancing disaster response capabilities by providing direct satellite communication to standard mobile devices was identified as a key benefit.

By augmenting terrestrial networks, D2D technology is poised to accelerate the journey toward achieving universal connectivity across India. The DoT reaffirmed its commitment to nurturing innovation, creating progressive policy frameworks, and fostering collaboration with all stakeholders. These efforts aim to promote dynamic communication technologies aligned with the vision of a digitally empowered India.
