Government Approves Subsidy Rates for Kharif 2026 Fertilizers
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has given the green light to a proposal from the Department of Fertilizers to establish the Nutrient Based Subsidy (NBS) rates for the Kharif Season of 2026. This initiative, effective from April 1, 2026, to September 30, 2026, will impact Phosphatic and Potassic (P&K) fertilizers, with a projected subsidy budget of approximately Rs. 41,533.81 crore. This amount represents an increase of around Rs. 4,317 crore over the budget allocated for the Kharif 2025 season, which was set at Rs. 37,216.15 crore.
Ensuring Affordable Fertilizer Access for Farmers
This move is designed to guarantee that farmers have access to essential fertilizers at subsidized, sensible, and competitive prices. The government aims to rationalize the subsidy on P&K fertilizers in light of recent fluctuations in international fertilizer prices and input costs.
Implementation Strategy
The approved subsidy will cover various P&K fertilizers, including DAP and NPKS grades, effective for the duration of the Kharif 2026 season. This initiative is set to ensure a steady supply of fertilizers to farmers, allowing them to obtain these vital agricultural products at affordable prices.
Background on Fertilizer Subsidies
The Indian government has been providing a range of 28 grades of P&K fertilizers, such as DAP, to farmers at subsidized prices through domestic manufacturers and importers. The NBS Scheme, which has been in effect since April 1, 2010, governs the subsidy process, reflecting the government’s commitment to support farmers in maintaining the affordability of vital fertilizers.
In response to current trends impacting international prices of fertilizers and other inputs like Urea, DAP, MOP, and Sulphur, the government has approved these NBS rates for Kharif 2026. This strategic decision seeks to ensure a continuous availability of fertilizers for farmers, reinforcing the government’s dedicated approach to promoting agricultural sustainability.
