Indian Steel Industry Thrives Amid Global Challenges

The Indian steel industry showcased remarkable growth in the financial year 2025–26, cementing its status as the world’s second-largest steel producer. This impressive performance was achieved despite facing global uncertainties and price fluctuations, thanks to robust domestic demand and a surge in infrastructure activities.

In the fiscal year 2025–26, India’s crude steel production soared by over 10.7% year-on-year, reaching approximately 168.4 million tonnes from April to March. This growth reflects a strong industrial momentum within the sector. A significant driver of this increase was the domestic demand for finished steel, which grew by 7–8% to around 164 million tonnes. Key sectors such as infrastructure, construction, railways, and manufacturing have driven this consumption, bolstered by the government’s ongoing commitment to large-scale infrastructure projects and urban development.

Strong Export Growth and Trade Balance

Another notable achievement during this period was the surge in steel exports. Finished steel exports jumped by an impressive 35.9%, totaling over 6 million tonnes. At the same time, imports plummeted by 31.7%, allowing India to reclaim its position as a net exporter of steel. This turnaround has cemented India’s presence in vital global markets, including the Middle East, Europe, and Southeast Asia, aided by improved competitiveness and market diversification of Indian steel products.

Investment and Capacity Expansion

The steel industry has also seen ongoing investments for capacity expansion, with total production capacity reaching about 220 million tonnes in FY 2025 – 26. This figure is projected to climb to 300 million tonnes by 2030, driven by investments from both public and private sectors. Leading companies like SAIL, Tata Steel, and JSW Steel have stepped up their spending on capacity growth, technological enhancements, and production of value-added steel, reflecting their confidence in sustained demand.

Price Stability and Margin Pressures

While steel prices in India experienced a downturn over the past three years, they began to recover in early 2026. Nonetheless, the industry’s profitability faced challenges due to fluctuating raw material prices, notably coking coal, and volatile global pricing dynamics. Increased logistics and freight costs further pressured profit margins, largely influenced by geopolitical tensions.

Challenges: Energy Crisis and Supply Disruptions

The sector also confronted emerging challenges, such as disruptions in gas supplies from the Middle East, which led to industrial fuel shortages threatening production stability for many manufacturers. To mitigate these issues, the government increased LPG allocations for critical sectors, including steel, ensuring that output levels are sustained. Rising energy prices and supply chain disruptions have made the industry more vulnerable to global crises.

Logistics and Domestic Growth

Rising domestic demand has intensified logistics activity within the sector. Indian Railways also reported increased freight movements of iron ore and finished steel, reflecting robust activity within the eight core industries in India, which include steel, coal, and electricity, among others. This trend highlights the steel sector’s crucial role in supporting broader economic growth across the country.

Future Outlook

Looking forward, the Indian steel industry is poised to maintain its growth trajectory, with production expectations continuing to rise, backed by strong domestic demand. However, it will need to navigate challenges such as energy security, rising input costs, and global market volatility. With ongoing policy support, infrastructure enhancements, and investments in sustainable steel technologies, the industry is well-positioned to remain an integral pillar of India’s industrial and economic development.
