Bank Strike Today: Impact of Nationwide Bharat Bandh on February 12 on Banking Operations

The nation is currently experiencing a Bharat Bandh, a nationwide strike initiated by a coalition of central trade unions protesting against the government’s alleged anti-worker policies. This strike has significant implications for banking operations, as several banking unions have joined the call for action. Customers across various cities are left uncertain about the functionality of bank branches, raising concerns about potential disruptions in services.

Bank Operations Amid the Strike

Despite the Bharat Bandh, banks are officially open today; however, customers may encounter disruptions in services. Major banking institutions, including the State Bank of India (SBI), Bank of Baroda, and UCO Bank, have issued notifications to the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) regarding possible service impacts. Bank of Baroda has communicated to its customers that while it is preparing for normal operations, branch services could be affected if the strike proceeds as planned. Similarly, SBI has made arrangements to maintain operations, but it has acknowledged that branch and office work may experience limited disruptions. UCO Bank has echoed these sentiments, indicating that while steps are being taken to ensure smooth operations, branch functioning could still be impacted by the strike. Customers are advised to plan their transactions in advance to mitigate any inconvenience that may arise from potential service limitations.

Participation of Bank Unions and Their Concerns

The strike has garnered support from major bank unions, including the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA), the All India Bank Officers Association (AIBOA), and the Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI). These unions have united with ten central trade unions to voice their concerns over new labor codes, which they argue are detrimental to workers. The unions claim that these reforms could impose stricter regulations on trade union registration, further complicating workers’ rights. Additionally, the protest highlights ongoing demands for improved working conditions, including a long-sought five-day work week to enhance work-life balance for employees.

The Bharat Bandh has been organized as a response to what the unions describe as the government’s “anti-worker, anti-farmer, and anti-national pro-corporate policies.” The strike has received backing from various farmer organizations and other groups across multiple sectors, amplifying its reach and impact. Trade unions estimate that nearly 30 crore workers from diverse industries are expected to participate in this nationwide agitation, reflecting widespread discontent with current policies.

Support from Various Sectors

The Bharat Bandh has not only seen participation from bank unions but has also received support from farmer organizations and other labor groups. The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), representing farmers, has called on its members to join forces with trade union workers to ensure the success of the all-India general strike. This collaboration underscores the shared grievances among different sectors regarding the government’s policies, which many perceive as favoring corporate interests over the welfare of workers and farmers.

The strike serves as a platform for these groups to express their collective dissatisfaction and demand changes that prioritize the rights and needs of the working class. As the day unfolds, the impact of the Bharat Bandh will be closely monitored, with many hoping for a resolution that addresses the concerns raised by the unions and their supporters.
