India Confident in Importing $500 Billion in Goods from the US Over Five Years, Says Piyush Goyal

India is poised to significantly increase its imports from the United States, with Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announcing that the country aims to purchase goods worth $500 billion over the next five years. Goyal described this figure as “very conservative,” considering India’s projected import demand could reach approximately $2 trillion during the same period. He emphasized that the growing economy will create ample opportunities for sourcing products from the US, provided that American suppliers remain competitive.
Framework for Bilateral Trade Agreement
In a recent development, India and the US have finalized the framework for the first phase of their bilateral trade agreement. This agreement outlines India’s commitment to purchasing $500 billion in US products, which includes energy resources, aircraft and parts, precious metals, technology products, and coking coal over the next five years. Goyal highlighted the increasing investments from global technology firms in India, which are expected to drive demand for imported equipment. He noted that the expansion of data centers in India will particularly boost the need for US-origin technology and equipment, projecting that the country could see the establishment of 10 gigawatts of data centers in the near future.
Current and Future Aviation Demands
When asked if the $500 billion purchase plan includes existing aircraft orders, Goyal confirmed that current commitments are part of the overall figure. He pointed out that India currently imports between $45 billion and $50 billion worth of goods from the US, primarily in sectors where domestic production is limited. The aviation sector, in particular, is expected to see substantial growth, with Goyal estimating that demand could exceed $100 billion over the next five years. He mentioned that India already has significant orders with Boeing for aircraft and engines, indicating that the aviation sector will require additional investments beyond current commitments.
Steel, Energy, and Technology Imports
Goyal also underscored the strong demand for coking coal, which is essential for the expansion of India’s steel sector. Currently, the country imports around 17-18 billion tonnes of coking coal, and he anticipates that rising steel production will further increase this demand. He stated that as India aims to reach a target of $300 billion in steel production, the need for coking coal could rise to $30 billion annually. Furthermore, Goyal pointed out that the growing consumption and industrial demand in India will continue to drive imports of advanced technology and industrial inputs. He emphasized the importance of high-quality machinery and technology products, particularly in the context of India’s ambitions to promote data centers, artificial intelligence, and critical manufacturing. Goyal concluded by reiterating that the US remains a leading provider of advanced technologies, making the projected import figures appear conservative for a nation aiming to become a $30 trillion economy.
