Bangladesh’s hopes of participating in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 are in jeopardy after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request to move their matches to Sri Lanka. The ICC’s decision followed a lengthy board meeting where Bangladesh’s proposal was voted on, with only two members supporting the request. Despite a last-minute appeal from the Pakistan Cricket Board, the majority voted against the BCB’s plea. BCB president Aminul Islam expressed hope for a positive outcome, stating that the board had presented valid reasons for their request before the vote. He emphasized the desire of both the players and the government to compete in the World Cup, but raised safety concerns regarding playing in India.
The ICC has issued a 24-hour ultimatum for Bangladesh to confirm their participation in the tournament scheduled from February 7 to March 8. If they fail to comply, Scotland is poised to take their place in Group C. Aminul highlighted that the players and government are eager to participate, but safety remains a significant concern. The BCB had proposed relocating matches to Sri Lanka or swapping groups with Ireland or Zimbabwe, but Sri Lanka declined the suggestion, stating they did not want a new team in their group.
In light of the ICC’s decision, Aminul sought additional time to consult with the government, which was granted. He remains hopeful that the ICC might reconsider their stance. A senior BCB official indicated that negotiations could still be possible, suggesting that there may be room for further discussions with the ICC.
