Air India Welcomes Its First Boeing 787-9 in a Major Fleet Upgrade
Air India has inaugurated a pivotal chapter in its modernization journey with the arrival of its first Boeing 787-9 aircraft at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport. This state-of-the-art aircraft, designated VT-AWA, touched down following an impressive non-stop flight that lasted nearly 17 hours from Boeing’s assembly plant in Everett, Washington. This milestone not only signifies the addition of a new aircraft to its fleet but also highlights the airline’s commitment to enhancing customer experience with cutting-edge aviation technology.
Modern Features and Upcoming Fleet Enhancements
The new Boeing 787-9 features a total of 296 seats organized across three distinct cabin classes: Business, Premium Economy, and Economy. Equipped with custom-designed cabin interiors, which are being unveiled gradually, the aircraft sets a new standard for comfort and luxury within the Air India fleet.
This update is merely the beginning for Air India, as the airline anticipates the delivery of five additional widebody aircraft throughout 2026, including the Airbus A350-1000 and subsequent Boeing 787-9 planes. In a concerted effort to reimagine its fleet, Air India is also upgrading its existing Boeing 787-8 aircraft, with 26 of them undergoing extensive retrofits. These aircraft will be outfitted with similar modern interiors as the newly introduced Boeing 787-9 and are scheduled to return to service with a refreshed look later this year.

The Boeing 787-9 is set to commence its international long-haul service in February 2026, with details surrounding its operational schedule to be disclosed in the near future. With nearly 60% of Air India’s widebody fleet anticipated to feature revamped interiors by year-end, the airline is poised to deliver an unparalleled travel experience that aligns with contemporary expectations for air travel.
