SmartGreen Aquaculture Launches India’s First Inland Trout Farming Project in Hyderabad
SmartGreen Aquaculture (SGA), a pioneering startup based in Hyderabad, has launched India’s first inland premium trout farming facility in Kandukur mandal, Ranga Reddy district. With an initial investment of approximately $6 million (around Rs 54 crore), this innovative facility utilizes sustainable recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) technology. It aims to produce 1,200 metric tonnes of trout annually while creating around 200 jobs in the region.
Innovative Farming Technology
The new trout farming facility employs advanced RAS technology, which allows for year-round production of trout in a controlled and biosecure indoor environment. This method not only enhances fish production but also ensures high-quality output. The facility features a dedicated two-acre hatchery and an indoor grow-out system designed to optimize the farming process. Additionally, it includes on-site processing capabilities for value-added rainbow trout products, ensuring that the fish are processed and packaged efficiently. The establishment also boasts cold-chain facilities to maintain product freshness and an online store for direct consumer sales, thereby streamlining the supply chain.
Government Support and Recognition
The inauguration of the first phase of the aquaculture farm was attended by Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Rajiv Ranjan Singh (Lalan Singh). He praised SmartGreen Aquaculture as a prime example of innovation within India’s startup ecosystem. Singh highlighted the significance of SGA’s ability to farm cold-water fish like trout in the warmer climate of the Deccan Plateau. He likened this achievement to the extraction of oil from sand, emphasizing the potential for increased production and high-value exports. Union Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy also expressed optimism about the future of Indian aquaculture, noting that such innovative projects can cultivate specialized fish species in inland regions.

Aditya Rithvik Narra, the founder and managing director of SmartGreen Aquaculture, shared insights into the company’s vision. He noted that traditional trout farming in India has been limited by geographical constraints. However, the precision-engineered trout farm demonstrates how advanced closed-loop water system aquaculture technologies can successfully bring premium cold-water species like rainbow trout closer to Indian consumers. Narra emphasized the importance of integrating hatcheries, farming, processing, and e-commerce under one roof, which reduces reliance on imports and intermediaries. This holistic approach not only supports local economies but also aims to meet the growing demand for high-quality fish products in India.
