Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited Empowers Women in Power Sector Field Roles

Chandigarh Power Distribution Limited (CPDL) has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at increasing women’s participation in the Indian power distribution sector. This innovative program sees the operational deployment of women in traditionally male-dominated frontline roles, such as meter reading and bill distribution, with 35 women already onboarded across Chandigarh.

A Shift Towards Inclusion

The initiative represents a significant advancement for CPDL towards fostering an inclusive workforce ready for future challenges. Plans are in place for 60 women to occupy half of the frontline operational roles, illustrating a committed effort to redefine workforce diversity in power distribution. With 35 women currently active in these roles, CPDL aims to expand into additional service areas in phases.

Empowered Workforce

The newly recruited women professionals will be responsible for various tasks, including door-to-door meter reading with digital devices, precise data recording, timely bill distribution, and basic customer support. They will also escalate any discrepancies to their supervisors, enhancing the overall efficiency and transparency of operations.

Safety First

To ensure the safety and confidence of these women, CPDL has instituted comprehensive safety measures. This includes mandatory mobile check-ins, a clear framework for emergency situations, and supervisor accompaniment in certain areas. Such protocols guarantee that the female workforce operates in a secure and supportive environment, which is critical for their performance.

Arun Kumar Verma, Director of CPDL, expressed pride in the initiative’s progress. He highlighted how enabling women to take on key responsibilities not only boosts operational efficiency but also promotes a more inclusive approach to public service. This effort aligns with the sector’s long-term vision and exemplifies the belief that diversity is essential for a robust and adaptable energy ecosystem.
