Anil Agarwal, Chairman of Vedanta Ltd., has made a strong appeal for India to boost its mineral production, particularly focusing on copper and gold. In a recent social media announcement, he stressed the urgency of ramping up output from the nation’s existing mining assets to achieve greater self-reliance.

Addressing India’s Import Dilemma

Agarwal pointed out that India currently imports approximately 99.9% of its gold and about 95% of its copper needs, despite having domestic resources that are either underutilized or inactive. He highlighted the pressing need to leverage these existing assets, many of which are under government control. “If the world wants to increase mineral production in the short term, there is only one way: sweat existing assets. New projects take 5 to 10 years to yield results,” he stated.

The Case for Private Investment

According to Agarwal, the favorable global pricing of minerals presents a compelling argument for inviting private investment to enhance production levels swiftly. He emphasized that increasing mineral output should be regarded as a national priority for India. “Take a plunge. It is the fastest way to self-reliance,” he remarked, advocating for a more aggressive approach to domestic mining.

He elaborated that revitalizing production from dormant assets requires focused investments, advanced technologies, and operational proficiency. “All it needs is some entrepreneurial energy, investment, and technology,” Agarwal explained, highlighting the critical role of innovation and expertise in the mining sector.

Fostering a Pragmatic Approach

Drawing on the wisdom of former Chinese leader Deng Xiaoping, Agarwal underscored the importance of a results-oriented mindset: “It doesn’t matter if the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.” His remarks come at a time when securing essential mineral supplies is increasingly vital for India’s manufacturing, infrastructure, and energy transition initiatives.
