Deputy Special Coordinator Informs Security Council of Precarious Gaza Ceasefire and Urgent Humanitarian Needs
As the United Nations Security Council convened for its final meeting on the question of Palestine for 2025, outgoing members emphasized the urgent need for action amid a faltering peace plan. Ramiz Alakbarov, the Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, highlighted the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, which has been marred by ongoing violence. The International Court of Justice’s advisory opinion from July 2024, which calls for Israel to cease all new settlement activities, was also highlighted. Denmark’s representative called for a change in the international community’s response to these longstanding issues, advocating for a more proactive approach to ensure humanitarian aid reaches those in need.

The representatives at the meeting expressed a collective sense of urgency regarding the situation in Palestine. Algeria’s representative remarked on the legitimacy crisis facing the international order, highlighting the routine of occupation and the silence surrounding it. Slovenia’s representative acknowledged the violations occurring in Gaza and emphasized the need for a two-state solution as the only viable path forward.
