New Permanent Representative of Bulgaria Presents Credentials
The new Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the United Nations, Gergana Karadjova, officially presented her credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres today. This marks a significant step in her diplomatic career, which has spanned over two decades. Karadjova’s extensive experience in international relations and her recent role as Director General for Political Affairs at the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs position her well for her new responsibilities at the UN.
Background and Education
Gergana Karadjova was born in 1975 in Sofia, Bulgaria. She graduated from the Lycée français de Sofia «Alphonse de Lamartine» in 1994. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations, obtained in 1999, and a Law degree from Sofia University «St. Climent Ohridski» in 2006. Additionally, she has a Master’s in French literature and has specialized in European studies in Paris and Strasbourg in 2000. Her academic credentials are further bolstered by her high-level training in European Security and Defence Policy at the European Security and Defence College from 2007 to 2008.
Karadjova began her career in diplomacy in 1999 when she joined the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Her early work focused on European integration, particularly during Bulgaria’s pre-accession and accession negotiations with the European Union. She has held various positions both in Sofia and at the Bulgarian Embassy in Paris, contributing significantly to Bulgaria’s integration into European structures.
Professional Experience
Throughout her career, Gergana Karadjova has taken on numerous roles that highlight her expertise in European Union policies. From 2008 to 2015, she worked on the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) within the Permanent Representation of Bulgaria to the EU in Brussels. She later served as the European Correspondent at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sofia, where she was promoted to Director for CFSP/CSDP and Deputy Director General for Political Affairs.
Karadjova’s diplomatic journey includes her tenure as the Permanent Representative of Bulgaria to the Political and Security Committee of the EU from November 2015 to April 2019. Following this, she served as the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Ireland from June 2019 until June 2023. In August 2023, she was appointed Director General for Political Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a role she held until her recent appointment to the UN.
Awards and Personal Life
Gergana Karadjova has received several accolades for her contributions to Bulgaria’s EU accession negotiations. She has been recognized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Interior for her exemplary service. Notably, she was awarded for her role in the first Bulgarian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2018 and for her diplomatic service in 2014.
